Mirra Andreeva Stuns Sabalenka to Win Indian Wells Title
Mirra Andreeva stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka with a thrilling comeback to win the Indian Wells title, marking her second consecutive WTA 1000 victory.

Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva staged a remarkable comeback on Sunday. She defeated world number one Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the Indian Wells final. As a result, she secured her second consecutive WTA 1000 title.

At just 17, Andreeva became the youngest women’s champion at Indian Wells since Serena Williams in 1999. Ultimately, she sealed her victory with a forehand winner and collapsed in celebration.

Andreeva Turns the Match Around

At the start, Sabalenka dominated with powerful strokes and clever drop shots. She saved four break points in the third game and then broke Andreeva twice in the first set. Consequently, Andreeva grew frustrated and smashed a ball into the stands.

However, the teenager found her rhythm in the second set. She gained confidence after breaking Sabalenka in the third game with a forehand winner. Furthermore, she defended two crucial break points in the sixth game. As the match progressed, Sabalenka’s mistakes increased, allowing Andreeva to take control.

In the third set, both players exchanged breaks early on. Nevertheless, Andreeva gained the edge when Sabalenka hit the net on break point in the third game. From that moment, she maintained her momentum and never looked back.

Smart Adjustments Lead to Victory

After losing the first set, Andreeva realized she needed a new strategy.

"I just realised, that, 'oh, well, what I do now, it doesn't work, so I have to change something,'" she said.

Therefore, she decided to play more aggressively while avoiding the temptation to overpower Sabalenka. "I didn’t try to over-hit her because I don’t think anyone can over-hit Aryna—she’s a super-powerful player. Instead, I tried to create something to make her uncomfortable. Point by point, game by game, I managed to do that," she explained.

Sabalenka Handles Defeat with Humor

Despite the loss, Sabalenka maintained her sense of humor during the trophy ceremony. Holding her runner-up trophy, she joked about her mixed experiences at Indian Wells.

"I kind of have a love-hate relationship with this place. I'll just put this trophy on top of another one and pretend it's the trophy for the winning," she said. "It's going to be a quite similar size, you know?"

Andreeva’s Rapid Rise Continues

With this victory, Andreeva has proven her growing dominance in women’s tennis. Notably, she has now defeated five top-10 players in a row. Her partnership with coach Conchita Martinez has played a key role in her success. Last year, Martinez guided her to the French Open semi-finals. More recently, Andreeva’s triumph in Dubai helped her enter the top 10.

After the match, Andreeva expressed deep gratitude to her team.

"(Martinez) gives me advice, you know, how to play and also how to maybe not to spend too much time on-site or how not to waste your energy," she said. "Because I have such a good team around me, they help to protect me."

Overall, Andreeva’s remarkable journey continues, proving she is a rising star in the tennis world.
