Ashwani Kumar, a 23-year-old left-arm fast bowler from Punjab. It was his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in the MI vs KKR match, and what a performance he delivered! The stage he chose to showcase his talent was truly magnificent. Although he had played only four T20 matches in domestic cricket before, he immediately grabbed attention. Notably, he took a wicket with his very first ball, dismissing KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane.
Ashwani Kumar took wickets in the match against KKR. He bowled under the watchful eyes of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. One is India’s ODI captain, another is in line for future captaincy, and SKY leads the T20I team. Moreover, Bumrah, designated as India’s Test captain, was likely watching from the team room.
Mumbai is known as the city of dreams, and on the night of March 31, Ashwani Kumar lived his. He displayed his skills in front of those who lead India in different formats. Before this match, he had played only four T20 games, with his last appearance on January 5.
A Lethal Bowling Performance
Ashwani impressed everyone with his pace, reaching speeds of 135 km/h. Additionally, he showcased his skill by mixing sharp yorkers with deceptive slower balls. Mumbai Indians had spotted his talent in the Sher E Punjab T20 tournament in 2024, which led them to buy him for INR 30 lakh.

From a Small Town to the Big Stage
Ashwani comes from Jhanjeri, a small town near Chandigarh. Before this match, he had represented Punjab in first-class, List A, and T20 cricket. However, he had played only four T20 matches, two Ranji Trophy games, and four List A matches before making his IPL debut.
His outstanding figures of 4/24 in three overs made him the first Indian to claim four wickets in an IPL debut. Previously, his best bowling figures were 3/37 in List A and 1/19 in T20s.
A Game-Changer for Mumbai Indians
Without a doubt, Ashwani’s performance has boosted Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack. More importantly, his fiery spell helped MI restrict KKR to just 116 in 16.2 overs after Hardik Pandya decided to bowl first.
Looking ahead, his dream debut has made him a key player to watch in the ongoing IPL season. If he continues performing at this level, he could become one of Mumbai Indians’ biggest assets.
