El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on Monday. This meeting comes as the US plans to deport hundreds of undocumented immigrants to El Salvador. In preparation, Bukele has agreed to receive these deportees. They will be held in Salvadoran prisons.
Trump Praises Cooperation with El Salvador
On his Truth Social account, Trump stated that both nations are “working closely together to eradicate terrorist organizations, and build a future of Prosperity.” He also added, “The future of deported migrants is up to President B and his Government. They will never threaten or menace our Citizens again!”
Social Media Sparks Stir with Bottle Photo
Before arriving in the US on Saturday, Bukele posted a curious photo on X (formerly Twitter). It showed an open bottle with the caption, “It’s real. This ain’t a drill!” Elon Musk replied with a laughing emoji. The image appeared to make a subtle jab at Europe’s environmental regulations.

Why the Open Bottle Hints at Europe
Online users quickly guessed that Bukele was mocking the European Union. The EU introduced the Single-Use Plastics Directive in 2019, which requires all plastic bottles sold from July 2024 to have tethered caps. Bukele’s open (non-tethered) bottle likely referenced this rule, suggesting a sarcastic take on European policies.
El Salvador Earns Praise from Trump Administration
Earlier this week, the US improved El Salvador’s travel safety ranking. It now ranks above many Western European countries. This marks a notable shift in El Salvador’s image under Bukele’s leadership.
Bukele’s Past Criticism of Europe
In 2024, Bukele had openly criticized Europe. He claimed, “The continent is no longer free and is declining.” He further remarked, “You can't claim the title free world if your people are not even free to walk down the streets.”
Talks to Focus on Security Cooperation
According to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, Trump and Bukele will discuss joint efforts to combat gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua. They plan to use El Salvador’s supermax prison as part of their strategy. Leavitt said El Salvador’s cooperation has become “a model for others” under Trump’s leadership.
