Vaibhav Suryavanshi had a dream debut in the Indian Premier League on Saturday. The 14-year-old became the youngest player ever to play in an IPL match. Rajasthan Royals brought him in as an Impact substitute during their run chase against Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur. He replaced an injured Sanju Samson.
Suryavanshi made his presence felt right away. He hit the first ball he faced for a massive six off Shardul Thakur. He didn’t stop there. In the second over, he smashed Avesh Khan for another six on the first ball. Later in the same over, he hit a four and even survived a dropped catch.
Aggressive Batting Impresses Fans
In the eighth over, the youngster struck Digvesh Rathi for another six. By then, he had reached 33 runs off just 18 balls. But his innings came to an end soon after. Aiden Markram bowled a slow delivery that beat him as he moved to the leg side. The ball passed the stumps and Rishabh Pant quickly removed the bails.
TV Umpire Rules Him Out
The on-field appeal led to a third umpire review. Replays showed that the ball spun away and missed Suryavanshi's bat. But his foot was off the ground when the bails came off. The TV umpire ruled him out. He had scored 34 runs off 20 balls. As he walked back, he appeared heartbroken.
Kartik Says He Was Crying
Former cricketer Murali Kartik noticed the boy's emotional state. He said on commentary, “Very first ball that he played. I don’t know, when he was walking back Anjum, I got the feeling that he was crying, he was weeping.”
Rajasthan Wins, But Fans Remember the Teen’s Bravery
Despite Suryavanshi’s strong start, LSG fell short. They scored 178/5 in their 20 overs while chasing 181. RR won the match by just two runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 74 off 52 balls turned out to be crucial. His dismissal shifted the momentum in Rajasthan’s favour.
