Met Gala 2025: A Glimpse Inside Fashion’s Most Exclusive Night
The 2025 Met Gala blends high fashion with strict rules, offering a glamorous yet tightly controlled night curated by Anna Wintour.

The Met Gala 2025 will once again take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While the red carpet draws global attention with bold fashion choices, the rest of the event remains a private affair. Only invited guests can witness what happens beyond the entrance.

Theme Highlights Black Fashion Influence

This year’s theme, “Tailored for You,” ties into the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The exhibit celebrates Black Dandyism. It honors the cultural impact of Black designers and showcases the art of fine tailoring.

Guests Follow a Planned Experience

First, attendees will take a private tour of the exhibit. Then, they will enjoy an exclusive dinner and a live musical performance.

Notably, Anna Wintour, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, controls everything. She manages seating, guest behavior, and even the dinner menu. More than 400 high-profile people are expected to attend under her supervision.

However, Guests Must Follow Strict Rules

Although the Met Gala celebrates creativity and freedom in fashion, organizers enforce several strict rules. Here’s a look at the biggest ones:

1. No Phones or Selfies Allowed

Firstly, guests cannot use their phones inside. Organizers strictly ban all forms of photography and video during the dinner and performance.

Even though celebrities often break the rule by clicking selfies in the bathroom, full event recordings never reach the public.

2. No Garlic, Onion, or Parsley in the Food

Secondly, the menu avoids certain ingredients. Since strong smells and visible herbs can ruin photos or cause bad breath, garlic, onions, and parsley are completely banned.

Moreover, messy foods like bruschetta are also avoided to prevent accidents on expensive outfits.

3. No Smoking Indoors

Thirdly, no one is allowed to smoke inside the venue. The reason is clear—smoke could damage the rare costumes or leave an unpleasant odor.

In fact, curator Andrew Bolton once told Gayle King that smoking inside is the one mistake that guarantees a guest won’t be invited again. Still, some celebrities find loopholes and smoke in the restrooms.

4. Entry Isn’t Free

Despite being an invite-only event, attendees must pay to attend. The Met Gala serves as a major fundraiser for the museum’s fashion department.

In 2024, a single ticket cost $75,000, and a table went for $350,000. Often, designers and fashion brands pay for these tickets in exchange for celebrities showcasing their outfits on the red carpet.

5. Anna Wintour Must Approve All Outfits

Even after receiving an invitation and paying for a ticket, guests can’t wear just anything. Instead, they must submit their outfit plans to Anna Wintour. She must approve the look before the guest walks the red carpet.

This rule is so well-known that the phrase “AWOK” (Anna Wintour Okay) has become a part of fashion culture.

6. Guests Can’t Choose Their Seats

Finally, guests don’t pick where they sit. Although they pay thousands, the organizers create a detailed seating chart.

Interestingly, spouses never sit next to each other. This rule encourages conversation among different people. Organizers also consider personal dynamics when finalizing the list. Planning for seating starts as early as December.

Met Gala: A Carefully Curated Night

The Met Gala may seem glamorous and free-flowing, but behind the scenes, it’s a carefully curated night. From the theme to the menu, everything follows strict rules. Above all, Anna Wintour ensures that every part of the night reflects the highest standards of fashion and discipline.
