Chennai Super Kings (CSK) edged out Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 2 wickets in the 57th match of IPL 2025 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Sensational bowling by Noor Ahmad, a blazing knock by Dewald Brevis, and sensible hitting by Shivam Dube set the stage, while MS Dhoni’s finishing skills sealed the win for CSK in a last-over thriller and knocked KKR out of the playoff race.
Earlier in the match, KKR posted 179/6 in 20 overs with the help of quick-fire knocks from Ajinkya Rahane, Andre Russell, and Manish Pandey. When CSK began their chase, KKR struck early, and half of the CSK team was back in the pavilion by the end of the powerplay. Then came Dewald Brevis, who brought CSK back into the match.
Early Blow for KKR
Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and chose to bat. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine opened the innings. Khaleel Ahmed bowled the first over for Chennai Super Kings. Gurbaz hit a boundary on the first ball. However, only 5 runs came from the over.
Anshul Kamboj bowled the second over. Gurbaz smashed a six but lost his wicket on the third ball. He scored 11 off 9 balls. Ajinkya Rahane came in next. He got off the mark with a boundary and then hit two more in Khaleel's next over. After 3 overs, KKR stood at 27/1.
Rahane and Narine Build Momentum
Narine started the fourth over with a boundary. KKR scored 9 runs in that over. Ashwin entered the attack in the fifth over. Narine welcomed him with two boundaries and a six. KKR completed 50 runs in the 5th over. In the sixth over, Rahane smashed a six and a four off Kamboj. He also brought up the 50-run partnership with Narine. KKR ended the powerplay at 67/1. Rahane was on 29 off 14, while Narine had 25 off 13.
CSK Fights Back
Ashwin bowled a tight seventh over and gave away only 2 runs. Noor Ahmad struck in the eighth over, removing Narine on the first ball. Narine scored 26 off 17. Later in the same over, Noor dismissed Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Manish Pandey walked in. The over produced 4 runs and 2 wickets. KKR were 73/3 after 8 overs.
Jadeja bowled the ninth over and conceded 7 runs. Noor gave away 7 runs in the tenth. After 10 overs, KKR were 87/3. Rahane stood strong with 38, while Pandey was on 9.
In the 11th over, Rahane smashed Jadeja for a six. Ashwin bowled a tight 12th over, giving just 4 runs. KKR crossed 100 in the over. Jadeja got Rahane’s wicket in the 13th over. Rahane scored 48 from 33 balls. Andre Russell came to the crease. KKR were 103/4 after 13 overs.
Russell’s Power Hitting
Pathirana bowled the 14th over and gave 6 runs. Russell went big in the 15th over, hitting two fours and a six. After 15 overs, KKR reached 124/4. In the 16th over, Russell added another six and a four. KKR scored 14 runs from the over.
Noor Ahmad bowled the 17th. Russell kept attacking with a six and a boundary. However, Noor dismissed him on the last ball. Russell made 38 off 21. Rinku Singh joined Pandey. KKR moved to 149/5.
Final Push from KKR
Pathirana gave away 10 runs in the 18th over. Pandey hit a six while Rinku added a four. Noor removed Rinku in the 19th over for 9. Ramandeep Singh came in. Pandey struck a four to finish the over with 10 runs. Pathirana bowled the final over and gave only 6 runs. KKR finished with 179/6. Pandey remained unbeaten on 35 off 28, while Ramandeep stayed not out on 4.
Worst Start for CSK
CSK needed 180 to win. Ayush Mhatre and Devon Conway opened the innings. Vaibhav Kumar struck early, dismissing Mhatre on the second ball. Urvil Patel came in on debut. He hit a six to get off the mark. CSK managed 8 runs but lost a wicket in the first over.
In the second over, Urvil Patel attacked Moeen Ali with two sixes and a four. However, Moeen got Conway’s wicket. Ashwin walked in next. CSK were 25/2 after 2 overs. Harshit Rana bowled the third over. Ashwin hit a four and a six. However, Rana dismissed Urvil on the last ball. Urvil scored a quick 31 off 11. CSK reached 37/3.
Jadeja came out at No. 5. Moeen bowled the fourth and gave only 6 runs. Rana returned for the fifth and got Ashwin’s wicket. Ashwin scored 8. Dewald Brevis came in next. Varun Chakaravarthy dismissed Jadeja in the sixth over. Jadeja scored 19 off 10. Shivam Dube came in as an impact sub. CSK were 62/5 after 6 overs. Narine gave 12 runs in the 7th over. Both Dube and Brevis found boundaries. Varun bowled the 8th over, conceding 5 runs. CSK moved to 79/5.
Brevis Turns the Game
In the 9th over, Brevis hit a six. CSK added 9 runs. Varun gave away only 5 runs in the 10th. After 10 overs, CSK were at 93/5. Brevis had 20, while Dube was on 12.
In the 11th over, Brevis started hitting big shots. He hit three sixes and three fours off Vaibhav Kumar. CSK crossed 100 runs and Brevis completed his half-century in just 22 balls. The pair also brought up a 50-run stand. However, Varun dismissed Brevis in the 13th over. Brevis made 52 off 25. MS Dhoni came in next.
Tight Bowling by KKR
Narine bowled a tidy 14th over, giving just 3 runs. Rana bowled the 15th. Dube hit a six. CSK moved to 140/6. Russell bowled the 16th and gave away only 7 runs.
In the 17th, Rana gave 8 runs and Dube hit another six. CSK crossed 150. Russell bowled the 18th and conceded just 4 runs. CSK were 162/6 after 18 overs.
Dramatic Finish
Vaibhav bowled the 19th. Dube hit a six but got out on the next ball for 45 off 40. Noor Ahmad came in and scored 2 runs but got out on the last ball of the over. CSK were 172/8.
Anshul Kamboj came in as the No. 10 batter. Russell had 7 runs to defend in the final over. Dhoni hit a six on the first ball. Then he levelled the scores on the third ball. Kamboj finished the match with a four on the next delivery. CSK won by 2 wickets and ended KKR’s playoff hopes. Dhoni remained not out on 17 off 18, while Kamboj finished with 4 off 1.
Brief Scorecard
Ajinkya Rahane, Andre Russell, and Manish Pandey played sensible knocks. However, Noor Ahmad and other CSK bowlers bowled well and restricted KKR to below 200. If KKR had scored 20–30 more runs, the result might have been different. When CSK began their chase, Vaibhav, Moeen Ali, and Varun rattled their top order. Dewald Brevis brought CSK back into the game. Shivam Dube played sensibly and took the game to the final over. Although he got out, MS Dhoni, known for his finishing skills, did the job.
