Rohit Sharma surprised everyone on Wednesday, by announcing his retirement from Test cricket "with immediate effect." As a result, he ended all speculation about his future in red-ball cricket and his chances of playing in the England Test series. His wife, Ritika Sajdeh, became emotional after hearing the news.
Rohit’s Strong Test Career Comes to a Close
Over the years, Rohit became one of India's most successful Test batters, especially in the second half of his career. He played 67 matches and scored 4,301 runs. Additionally, he recorded 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, with a batting average of 40.57.
However, his recent form had raised concerns. Since September, he had struggled in Tests. For example, during the Australia tour, he managed only 31 runs in three matches. As a result, he decided to drop himself from the playing XI for the final Test in Sydney.
Rohit Confirms His Decision on Instagram
Rohit took to Instagram to confirm his retirement. He posted a picture of his Test cap along with a heartfelt message.
"Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format."
Shortly after, Ritika shared the same story on her Instagram. She added emoticons showing a broken heart, a salute, and teary eyes.
BCCI Responds to Rohit's Retirement
Following Rohit’s announcement, the BCCI thanked him for his service in Test cricket. Moreover, they confirmed that he will continue to captain India in ODIs.
"Thank you, Captain! End of an era in whites! @ImRo45 bids adieu to Test cricket. He will continue to lead India in ODIs. We are proud of you, Hitman," the board wrote.

India to Appoint New Test Captain
With Rohit stepping away from Tests, India must now pick a new Test captain. The five-match series in England is approaching, and several names are under consideration. These include Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant.
Meanwhile, reports suggest the BCCI is leaning toward Shubman Gill. He already serves as vice-captain in both ODI and T20 formats.
