BCCI to Meet on Sunday: IPL 2025 Resumption, Foreign Players, and More on the Agenda
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting on Sunday to discuss the potential resumption

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting on Sunday to discuss the potential resumption of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The league had been suspended for a week on Friday due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

The meeting comes a day after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, which was initiated by Pakistan and mediated by the United States. The ceasefire demands both nations to halt all military operations starting at 5 pm. "The war has stopped. In the new situation, BCCI office bearers, officials, and IPL Governing Council will discuss the matter tomorrow (Sunday) and take a call. We will see which schedule works best to complete the tournament," said BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla on Saturday.

Challenges in Restarting the IPL

The BCCI faces a significant challenge in restarting the league, with the suspension set to end by Thursday or Friday. The ceasefire comes as good news not only for the BCCI but also for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which had suspended the 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League on the same day as the IPL suspension.

However, hopes for peace were dashed when Pakistan violated the ceasefire within hours on Saturday. This breach of the ceasefire has increased concerns that tensions between the two nations may escalate in the coming days. As a result, the BCCI might consider extending the suspension for a few more days to carefully evaluate the situation.

Possible Venues and Double-Headers

There have been reports suggesting that the remaining matches of the IPL season could be relocated to Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, located in southern India, away from the areas affected by the ongoing conflict. However, Shukla clarified that this plan was devised for situations where the two countries continued their military exchanges. If the ceasefire holds, such a move may not be necessary. "That was an option when war was going on. There are many options that have been discussed. The ceasefire has just been announced; give us some time to discuss, and then a decision will be made," Shukla added.

Bringing Foreign Players Back

The BCCI also faces the difficult task of getting foreign players to return for the remainder of the tournament. With safety concerns arising from the hostilities between India and Pakistan, convincing the international players that they will be safe could be a major challenge. Furthermore, some foreign players might seek rest after playing in the IPL for over a month, with the ICC World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa scheduled to begin at Lord’s on June 11.

Final Decision to Be Made Soon

Despite the complications, the BCCI is determined to complete the IPL season by the end of the month. There is even a possibility of scheduling double-headers for the remaining matches, including 12 league games, excluding the Punjab Kings-Delhi Capitals match, which was called off shortly after it began in Dharamsala. The final decision regarding the resumption of the season will depend on the developments surrounding the ceasefire and the broader geopolitical situation.
