Elon Musk admitted he crossed a line. On Wednesday, he posted on X, “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.”

Previously, Donald Trump had warned Musk of "serious consequences." This came after reports said Musk planned to support candidates running against Trump-backed Republicans in the midterms.

Trump Responds with a Threat

In response, Trump told NBC, “If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that.” However, he did not clarify what the consequences would be.

The Rift Begins with a Tax Bill

The fallout began when Musk publicly attacked Trump’s tax plan called “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB). He described it as a “disgusting abomination.”

This bill, meant to cut taxes, would also add about $3 trillion (AUD 4.62 trillion) to the U.S. national debt.

Soon after, Musk stepped down from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DoGE). He criticised the bill again, saying it would “burden American citizens with crushing, unsustainable debt.”

Musk Fires Back

Following the criticism, Trump threatened to cancel federal support and contracts tied to Musk’s companies. In return, Musk claimed he helped Trump win the election.

He wrote, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.” He ended with, “Such ingratitude.”

Online War Escalates

Musk reshared posts attacking Trump. One post even called for Trump's impeachment. Trump replied sharply, saying, “Elon was ‘wearing thin’, I asked him to leave […] and he just went CRAZY!”

Musk Drops a Bombshell

Then, Musk made a shocking claim. He said Trump’s name appeared in the files related to Jeffrey Epstein. He posted, “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”
However, Musk later deleted that post.

Policy Changes Add Fuel

Meanwhile, Trump blamed Musk’s anger on the government’s decision to end electric vehicle tax credits. On May 29, Musk told CBS, “I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit… and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”

Trump Still Sees a Future with Musk

Despite all this, Trump predicted Musk would return to his side. “Elon’s really not leaving. He’s going to be back and forth, I think, I have a feeling,” he said.
