A strong earthquake hit Peru on Sunday. It killed one person and injured five others. Additionally, it caused landslides in Lima and surrounding areas.
Quake Epicenter Near Lima
The quake struck just before noon. Peru’s National Seismological Center reported a magnitude of 6.1. The epicenter was about 30 kilometers from Callao, a port city next to Lima. Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey gave a slightly lower reading of 5.6.
Soon after the tremor, the National Police confirmed a death. A wall collapsed in Lima and crushed a man’s car, killing him instantly.
Landslides Across the City
Moreover, the quake caused landslides in several parts of Lima. Local channel Latina aired videos showing falling rocks and rising dust.
No Tsunami Warning Issued
However, officials confirmed there was no tsunami threat. President Dina Boluarte urged people to remain calm. She assured the public by saying, “The Pacific coastline was not under threat.”
Football Match Suspended
As a result of the quake, authorities suspended a major football match in Lima. They acted quickly to protect players and fans.
Peru Lies in an Earthquake Zone
Peru has a population of 34 million. It sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country records over 100 noticeable quakes every year.
Past Quakes Caused Heavy Damage
In 2021, a 7.5-magnitude quake hit the Amazon region. It injured 12 people and destroyed more than 70 homes. Furthermore, Peru’s deadliest earthquake happened in 1970. It struck the Ancash region and killed about 67,000 people.
