French President Emmanuel Macron visited Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. During the trip, he responded to US President Donald Trump’s idea of annexing the region. He said, “I don’t think that’s what allies do.”
Macron Reaffirms France and EU Support
On his way to the G7 summit in Canada, Macron shared his views on Greenland. He said, “France’s and the EU’s solidarity” stands with the territory. Furthermore, he added, “It’s important that Denmark and the Europeans commit themselves to this territory, where the strategic stakes are very high and whose territorial integrity must be respected.”
Trump Linked Greenland to US National Security
Previously, Donald Trump said Greenland holds strategic importance for U.S. national security. He referred to its location between the Arctic and Atlantic. Moreover, he didn’t rule out using force to acquire it.
Greenlanders Reject US Control
Meanwhile, opinion polls show that most of Greenland’s 57,000 people want independence from Denmark. However, they do not want to become part of the United States. In response, Denmark firmly stated, “Greenland is not for sale” and emphasized that only Greenlanders can decide their own future.
Macron’s Short Visit Sends a Strong Message
Macron spent six hours in Greenland. According to his office, the visit was “a signal in itself.” Both Denmark and Greenland requested his presence. During the trip, he joined Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen for talks aboard a naval frigate.
Climate and Development Talks Included
Additionally, Macron planned to visit a glacier to observe the impact of climate change. He also discussed how Greenland could join EU development programs while keeping full control over its territory. However, officials canceled a visit to a hydroelectric plant.
Overall, Macron used his Greenland visit to oppose Trump’s takeover idea. He voiced strong support for the territory’s sovereignty and urged Europe to stay engaged in the Arctic region.
