A cloudburst in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district early Sunday left around nine workers missing. The incident severely damaged an under-construction hotel in the region.
Disaster strikes in the night
According to PTI, the cloudburst occurred around 2 a.m. near Paligad-Silai Band in Barkot Tehsil. It triggered a sudden surge of water that struck the construction site where the workers were staying. As a result, rescue teams were immediately sent to the area.
Authorities respond quickly
Soon after the incident, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) reached the site. Local police officers also joined the search and rescue operation. The teams are now working to trace the missing workers and assess further damage.
Heavy rain worsens situation
For the past week, Uttarakhand has faced heavy and continuous rainfall. This has caused landslides, roadblocks, and other weather-related accidents across the hilly terrain.
Just a day earlier, on June 28, authorities had restricted travel on the Sonprayag-Munkatiya road in Rudraprayag district. This road is especially important for pilgrims heading to Kedarnath, as it connects to key base points for the journey.
Risk remains high
Officials have warned that rain-triggered disasters remain a threat. Landslide-prone areas and construction zones are under close watch. Rescue operations are still ongoing at the Uttarkashi site as teams search for any survivors.
