Hollywood actor Richard Gere arrived in Dharamshala this week to celebrate the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama. The official birthday falls on July 6, according to the Gregorian calendar. The celebrations brought together monks, Tibetan leaders, global followers, and long-time supporters in the hills of Himachal Pradesh.
Gere Recalls Inspiring Moment with the Dalai Lama
Gere, who first met the Dalai Lama in 1978 and later embraced Buddhism, reflected on a moment that stayed with him for years.
He shared that during one visit, he felt exhausted and asked the Dalai Lama if he could stop. The Dalai Lama had replied that Gere could stop only when he himself stops — and that would be never.
Gere added that the commitment he made was not just for one lifetime. He believed it extended across many lives. He stressed that his support wasn’t only for Tibet, but also for the Tibetan people, who had suffered under the Chinese Communist Party for decades.
Gere Highlights Importance of the Monastery
Gere, who is known globally for movies like Pretty Woman and Chicago, said he came with several close friends.
He mentioned that all his friends were in Dharamshala to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s birthday. According to him, the monastery held deep personal meaning. He said it was always a joy to visit and be part of the community.
Tibetan Leaders Praise Gere’s Dedication
Tenzin Jigdal, a Member of Parliament in the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, publicly thanked Gere.
Jigdal said he felt moved by Gere’s story and appreciated how the actor showed his strong connection with the Dalai Lama. He also expressed gratitude for Gere’s continued efforts and called him a tireless supporter of Tibet. He posted his message on X (formerly Twitter).
Dharamshala Hosts Global Celebration
The 90th birthday celebration drew monks, spiritual leaders, and international visitors. It wasn’t just a birthday party. It became a reminder of the Tibetan people’s resilience and the global support behind their peaceful struggle.
With respected figures like Richard Gere in attendance, the event reinforced the powerful bond between the Tibetan community and its international allies.
