US billionaire Elon Musk revealed his plan to launch a third political party the “America Party” aiming to challenge the long-standing dominance of Democrats and Republicans. While many billionaires have explored political ventures, Musk’s strategy is unique. Instead of running for president, he wants to gain influence in Congress by targeting a small but powerful group of seats.
Announcing the Plan on X
Musk posted the idea on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He wrote, “Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?” Along with this, he launched a poll asking users to vote “yes” or “no.”

Should we create the America Party?
By the time only six hours were left in the poll, over 1.12 million people had voted. The results showed strong support — 64.7% voted yes, while 35.3% said no.
Focused Plan, Not a Publicity Stunt
Although it might look like a publicity move, Musk outlined a detailed two-step plan. He proposed that the new party focus on just a few Senate and House seats — specifically, 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts. This small number is enough, he said, to tip the balance of power in Congress, especially given the narrow voting margins in current legislation.
He added, “That would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people.”
Expert Opinion on the Hurdles
However, political experts have raised concerns about the difficult path ahead. Grant Davis Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University, told Newsweek that a viable third party faces deep structural challenges in the US electoral system.
Reeher explained, “The most significant is that... our legislatures and executive elections use geographically defined districts that are represented by one person, who is elected by finishing first in the field, regardless of the size of the plurality.” He also pointed out how the Electoral College system for presidential elections — where states award all their votes to a single candidate — makes it even harder for third parties to gain ground.
While Elon Musk’s plan to launch the America Party may seem ambitious, it’s more than a social media campaign. His focus on congressional influence instead of a presidential run shows a strategic approach to reshaping the US political system. However, entrenched election laws and structures could pose significant roadblocks to his vision.
