US Imposes Sanctions on UN Gaza Rights Expert Francesca Albanese
The US has sanctioned UN rights expert Francesca Albanese for criticizing Israel’s Gaza war, accusing her of promoting “political and economic warfare.”

The Trump administration has officially imposed sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the UN’s special rapporteur on human rights in the West Bank and Gaza. This move intensifies Washington’s crackdown on critics of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

US Targeted Albanese After Failed Efforts to Remove Her

The US had spent months pressuring the United Nations to remove Albanese from her role. However, those efforts did not succeed. Albanese, an Italian lawyer who focuses on human rights, has consistently accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza. Both the Israeli and US governments reject this accusation.

Albanese also recently urged other countries to place sanctions on Israel in order to stop its ongoing military attacks. She supported the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue war crimes indictments against several Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Additionally, she published reports accusing some US companies of supporting Israel’s operations in Gaza.

US Secretary of State Justifies Sanctions

In response, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “Albanese’s campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel will no longer be tolerated. We will always stand by our partners in their right to self-defense.”

Albanese Faces Heavy Criticism from Pro-Israel Voices

Albanese’s actions have drawn strong criticism from US officials and pro-Israel groups. Just last week, the US mission to the UN released a statement that labeled her as being filled with “virulent anti-Semitism and unrelenting anti-Israel bias.” The statement also called her genocide and apartheid accusations “false and offensive.”

Sanctions Come Amid Wider Crackdown on Pro-Palestinian Support

These sanctions are part of a larger push by the Trump administration to suppress pro-Palestinian voices in the US. Earlier this year, officials began arresting and deporting students and professors who participated in pro-Palestinian protests at American universities.

Background: The Israel-Hamas Conflict

The conflict between Israel and Hamas reignited on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched a deadly attack on Israel. Around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and 251 hostages were taken. In retaliation, Israel began a major military offensive in Gaza.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 57,000 Palestinians have died since then. While the ministry states that many of the victims are women and children, it does not clarify how many were fighters.
