England Test Series | 3rd Test | Day 2: Bumrah’s Five-for and Archer’s Comeback Light Up Lord’s
Bumrah’s five-wicket haul and Archer’s fiery return thrilled Lord’s on a dramatic day of Test cricket.

India bowled out England for 387 in the first innings on Day 2 in the third test at Lord's. Joe Root completed his century with a boundary in the first over of the day. Jasprit Bumrah took five wickets in the innings. At stumps, India were 145 for 3. Shubman Gill was dismissed for 16 in the first innings. KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 53, while Rishabh Pant was not out on 19.

Archer Returns with Fire

Jofra Archer had waited three years for this comeback. During his long rehab, people kept telling him about light at the end of the tunnel. Finally, the light was real. Three balls into his return over, he struck gold. He dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal with a 89 mph thunderbolt. Then he greeted Karun Nair with a 93 mph missile.

While Bumrah added to his legacy, Archer brushed off the rust. Lord’s witnessed high-quality pace bowling from both ends.

Rahul Stays Calm Amidst Chaos

KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 53 at stumps. He carried India’s hopes, with the team trailing by 242 runs. His innings showed patience and skill. He judged balls outside off stump well. He waited for loose deliveries and punished them when England bowled straighter.

Archer tested him with a sharp 142 kph bouncer. Rahul lost balance, but still managed to drop the ball safely. In the very next over, Ben Stokes bowled wide of the crease, trying to draw a mistake. Rahul responded with a perfect straight bat. He refused to fall for the trap.

Root Shines Again

Joe Root started the day on 99. The first ball gave him width, and he guided it to the third-man boundary. That four brought up his 37th Test century. With that, he entered the top five all-time Test century makers. He crossed legends like Rahul Dravid and Steve Smith.

Later, Root showed off in the field too. He took a diving catch to reach 211 career catches—the most by any England fielder.

Red for Ruth Day Adds Meaning

It was a special day at Lord’s. The crowd wore red to support the Ruth Strauss Foundation, run by former captain Andrew Strauss. The pitch also came alive. Fast bowlers got more bounce and pace, which made swing and seam harder to handle.

Set batters struggled unexpectedly. Ben Stokes lost his off stump right after hitting a boundary. Bumrah then bowled Root, who suddenly became flat-footed on 104.

England Tail Adds Vital Runs

Shubman Gill entered the match in great form. He had scored 585 runs in four innings before this. But England targeted him smartly. They placed five fielders on the leg side and bombarded him with bouncers. He got only 16.

Later, Jamie Smith helped England recover from 271 for 7 to 355 for 7 by lunch. But Siraj got his edge right after the break. Siraj raised 20 fingers as a tribute to footballer Diogo Jota, who died in a recent car crash in Spain.

Still, Smith had done his job. He built a strong stand with Brydon Carse. Carse batted bravely, playing attacking shots. He reached his first Test fifty. England’s last three wickets added 116 crucial runs.

Indian Bowlers Fight Back

India’s bowlers kept trying. Bumrah was on another level. He got the ball to swing one way and seam the other. Four batters lost their stumps to him. He was almost untouchable. Bumrah had rested earlier just to make his mark at Lord’s. He finally got his name on the honours board. After the five-for, Siraj had to lift Bumrah’s hand in celebration.

That five-wicket haul also took Bumrah past Kapil Dev’s record. Now, Bumrah holds the most five-fors by an Indian outside India.

Drama Over the Ball

India challenged several umpiring calls. Their frustration grew after the second new ball was replaced just 10.3 overs into use. The replacement ball was also damaged. During the drinks break, Gill spent time complaining to umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula. Eventually, even the second ball was swapped again after only eight overs.

Pant’s Grit and Nair’s Missed Chance

Rishabh Pant batted despite being injured. Karun Nair came close to redemption but fell 10 runs short of a half-century. England’s plan to trap Gill worked. The Indian captain tried to break the field with an unusual cut shot. But Woakes outsmarted him. With the keeper standing up, Woakes bowled a wider ball. Gill edged it. That wicket gave England a stronger grip by stumps.

Jasprit Bumrah skipped the Edgbaston Test. He saved his energy for Lord’s. Maybe the pull of the iconic honour’s board played a role. If that was the goal, it paid off. Bumrah took five wickets and helped bowl out England for 387. Yet, he wasn’t the only fast bowler who impressed. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
