Australia Crushes India in First Women’s ODI

In the opening match of the women's three-ODI series, Australia defeated India by five wickets in Brisbane. The match saw India struggle with both bat and ball, while Australia capitalized on their home advantage.

India’s Batting Collapse

Electing to bat first, India faced a disastrous collapse. Their innings ended at a mere 100 runs in 35 overs. Jemimah Rodrigues emerged as the top scorer with 23 runs off 42 balls. However, frequent fall of wickets prevented India from building partnerships. Despite brief resistance from Harmanpreet Kaur and Harleen Deol, the team faltered under Australia’s disciplined bowling attack. Megan Schutt was the standout performer, claiming her first ODI five-wicket haul. Her figures of 5/19 dismantled India’s lineup, leaving them reeling. Schutt later shared her satisfaction, stating, "It feels great to tick off with a fifer, but the win is even more satisfying."

Australia’s Confident Chase

Chasing a low target, Australia started strongly. Openers Phoebe Litchfield and Georgia Voll built a solid foundation. Although the team lost a few quick wickets, the target proved too small to create pressure. Voll remained unbeaten with 46 runs off 42 balls, guiding her side to 102/5 in just 17 overs. India’s bowlers showed some fight. Renuka Singh claimed three wickets for 45 runs, while Priya Mishra picked up two. Yet, the lack of a competitive total left them with little to defend.

Captain’s Insights

After the game, India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted their shortcomings. “We bowled really well but our batting failed,” she said. Kaur emphasized the need to reflect on mistakes and promised a stronger comeback in the next match. Australia’s captain Tahlia McGrath praised her team’s execution. “The bowlers were outstanding, making my job very easy,” she said. McGrath also lauded Georgia Voll’s confidence and acknowledged that her side could still improve on batting in challenging conditions.

Looking Ahead

The second ODI will take place on Saturday, December 7, starting at 11:45 PM GMT. India will aim to bounce back and level the series, while Australia seeks to maintain their winning momentum.
