No Bilateral Series, But Plays Afghanistan in World Cup: Cricket Australia
Australia has defended its decision to play Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup, despite canceling all bilateral series with the country. This move comes in response to the Taliban’s crackdown on women’s sports. Cricket Australia (CA) explained that its stance was based on human rights concerns.

Cricket Australia’s Defense

Cricket Australia chairman, Mike Baird, strongly supported the decision. He said, “We’ve taken a position, and we’re proudly standing up where we think we should. There’s all types of lines you can draw. We’ve drawn a line.” His comments followed accusations from former ICC chairman, Greg Barclay, who called it hypocritical.

Criticism from Barclay

Barclay argued that if Australia opposed the Taliban’s policies on women’s rights, they should also boycott World Cup matches against Afghanistan. He stated, “If you want to make a political statement, don’t play them in a World Cup. Principles are principles. It’s not about having half a principle.”

Australia’s Selective Boycott

Australia has refused to play Afghanistan in bilateral series since 2021. In March 2023, they canceled a T20 series, citing concerns about women’s rights under Taliban rule. The Afghanistan Cricket Board responded, urging CA to understand their position and not give in to political pressures. Despite these cancellations, Australia continues to play Afghanistan in ICC tournaments. The two teams met in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and the 2024 T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean.

Women’s Cricket in Afghanistan

Before the Taliban took over, Afghanistan had made progress in women’s cricket. In 2020, a small group of semi-professional women players emerged. However, many fled the country after the Taliban’s return to power, with several seeking refuge in Australia.

Afghanistan’s Victories

Afghanistan has made significant strides on the cricket field. In June 2024, they defeated defending champions Australia by 21 runs in a historic T20 World Cup match. Gulbadin Naib, who played a key role in the win, said, “We have waited for this moment for a long time – at last, we beat Australia.” Afghanistan also came close to defeating Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, Glenn Maxwell’s double century secured victory for Australia. Australia later won the World Cup by beating India in the final.

Future Encounters

Australia and Afghanistan may face each other again in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The tournament is set to take place in Pakistan in February and March.
