UP Rudras defeated Delhi SG Pipers 3-1 in the Hero Hockey India League 2024-25 on Saturday. Floris Wortelboer (30'), Kane Russell (43'), and Tanguy Cosyns (54') scored for the Rudras. On the other hand, Jake Whetton (29') scored the lone goal for Delhi. With this victory, UP Rudras moved to second place on the points table.

Rudras Dominate Early Play

Initially, the Rudras showed their strength by controlling possession and creating circle entries. They earned the first penalty corner (PC) of the match, but unfortunately, Kane Russell and Sam Ward couldn’t make the most of the opportunity. However, Odisha’s Sudeep Chirmako made several impressive attacking runs, although the first quarter ended 0-0.

Delhi Takes the Lead

In the second quarter, Rudras had another chance with a PC, but it was saved by the keeper. Although Lalit Upadhyay picked up the rebound, he missed the target. Soon after, Delhi took the lead in the 29th minute. Captain Jake Whetton dribbled past defenders and scored. Nevertheless, Rudras responded swiftly, with Wortelboer equalizing just a minute later to make it 1-1.

Rudras Take Control

As the game progressed, Rudras earned another PC in the 43rd minute. This time, Kane Russell made no mistake, converting it with a powerful flick to give Rudras a 2-1 lead.

Delhi Struggles to Equalize

In the final quarter, Delhi pushed hard for an equalizer. Six minutes into the quarter, Manjeet took a brave shot at goal, but it missed. They earned another PC shortly after, but still couldn’t score. Meanwhile, Rudras extended their lead in the 54th minute when Tanguy Cosyns scored a brilliant PC to make it 3-1.

Delhi’s Last Attempt Fails

With less than five minutes remaining, Delhi earned one more PC, but again failed to convert. The Rudras held their ground defensively and secured a 3-1 win. As a result, they climbed to second place in the standings. This victory marked their third outright win in five matches.
