Women’s Hero Hockey India League 2025: Odisha Warriors Defeat Delhi SG Pipers 4-0 in Opening Match
The Odisha Warriors dominated the inaugural Women's Hero Hockey India League with a 4-0 win over the Delhi SG Pipers, thanks to goals from Jansen, Kaur, and Moes.
The inaugural Women’s Hero Hockey India League 2024-25 kicked off on Sunday in Ranchi, with the Odisha Warriors securing a dominant 4-0 victory over the Delhi SG Pipers. Yibbi Jansen (16' and 37'), Baljeet Kaur (42'), and Freeke Moes (43') were the goal scorers for Odisha.

Exciting Opening Ceremony

The tournament began with a vibrant ceremony that showcased the rich culture of Jharkhand. Mrs. Kalpana Soren, a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, unveiled the Women’s Hockey India League trophy alongside the captains of the four teams.

First Quarter: A Cautious Start

Both teams began cautiously, with neither side managing to find the back of the net. They created a few opportunities, but the first quarter ended 0-0, as neither team was able to convert. In the 16th minute, Odisha earned a penalty corner, and Jansen made no mistake. Her drag flick flew past the goalkeeper, putting the Warriors ahead 1-0.

Pipers Struggle to Convert

The Pipers responded by earning a series of penalty corners, but Odisha’s defense remained resolute. Despite more possession, Delhi couldn’t break through, and the score remained 1-0 at halftime.

Warriors Double Their Lead

Odisha extended their lead early in the third quarter when Jansen scored again in the 37th minute, securing her second goal. Five minutes later, Baljeet Kaur added another, making it 3-0 after a rebound shot. Odisha wasn’t done yet. Just a minute later, in the 43rd minute, Freeke Moes fired a shot past the Delhi goalkeeper, bringing the score to 4-0.

Pipers Fail to Capitalize on Power Play

In the final quarter, Odisha’s captain Neha received a yellow card in the 49th minute, leaving the Warriors a player short. However, the Pipers failed to capitalize on this opportunity. They earned a few more penalty corners, but Odisha’s defense kept them at bay, ensuring a 4-0 victory. With this comprehensive win, the Odisha Warriors made an impressive start to their Women’s Hockey India League campaign.
