Sumit Nagal’s Australian Open journey came to an end with a 3-6, 1-6, 5-7 loss to Tomas Machac. The Czech player dominated the match with his consistency and precision. Unfortunately, Nagal, ranked 91st, was unable to capitalize on key moments.
Early Confidence, Then Mistakes
Nagal began the match with confidence, winning his first three service games and dropping just two points. However, as the match progressed, mistakes crept in. A double fault and a series of errors led to two breakpoints, which Machac converted in the seventh and ninth games to claim the first set.
Machac Takes Control
In the second set, Nagal had an opportunity to break Machac early, but he was unable to convert the chance. From that point, Machac took control, dominating the set. Despite Nagal’s efforts, he struggled to match Machac’s pace, and the Czech player wrapped up the set in just 36 minutes.
Nagal Fights Back, But Errors Cost Him
Trailing by two sets, Nagal mounted a spirited fightback in the third. He secured an early break, racing to a 3-0 lead, and then extended it to 5-3. However, a series of errors, including another double fault, allowed Machac to break back. Capitalizing on this momentum, Machac ultimately closed out the match.
Nagal’s Early Exit
Last year, Nagal made headlines by reaching the Australian Open main draw through qualifiers. He stunned Alexander Bublik in the first round before bowing out in the second. This time, however, his campaign ended early with the defeat to Machac.
Indian Representation Continues in Doubles
While India’s singles campaign ended, there is still strong representation in the doubles event. Rohan Bopanna, last year’s men’s doubles champion, is teaming up with Colombia’s Nicolas Barrientos. Additionally, Yuki Bhambri, N Sriram Balaji, and Rithvik Bollipalli are competing with their respective doubles partners.
