UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Kyiv Visit Marks Historic 100-Year Deal
Keir Starmer signs a historic 100-year partnership agreement with Ukraine, reinforcing long-term UK support against Russia’s invasion.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer arrived in Kyiv to sign a 100-year partnership agreement between the UK and Ukraine. This pact not only formalizes the support the UK has already provided to Ukraine but also offers additional aid. This visit marks Starmer’s first trip to Ukraine as prime minister. It comes just days before Donald Trump returns to the White House, reinforcing the UK’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine. Ukrainian President Zelensky is seeking security guarantees from key allies, especially amid concerns that the US may push for peace talks with Russia.

Starmer’s Timely Visit

Unlike other leaders, Starmer waited six months before visiting Ukraine. However, after taking office, his visit is a strong pledge of long-term support. Upon his arrival in Kyiv, he was greeted by UK Ambassador Martin Harris and Ukrainian envoy Valerii Zaluzhnyi. The highlight of his visit is the signing of the 100-year partnership agreement.

A Partnership for the Future

Starmer emphasized that this agreement is not only about present concerns but also about long-term collaboration. “This is not just about the here and now; it is also about an investment in our two countries for the next century,” he said. He also criticized Russia’s actions, calling them a “monumental strategic failure” in trying to weaken Ukraine.

New Aid and Cooperation

As part of the agreement, the UK has committed more military and economic aid to Ukraine. Moreover, the partnership will focus on areas like maritime security, drone technology, and healthcare. Ukraine is also looking for security guarantees and hopes for NATO membership. Additionally, Zelensky is pushing for peacekeepers to patrol the frontline if fighting ceases.

Continued UK Support

This new agreement builds on the £12.8 billion in support the UK has already provided to Ukraine. In addition, the UK will continue offering £3 billion in military aid each year. Ukraine has already used British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles to target Russian military facilities.

A Long-Term Commitment

The 100-year partnership will be formalized in both a treaty and a political declaration. Plans for this agreement began under the previous Conservative government. Notably, Starmer had previously visited Ukraine in 2023 as the leader of the opposition and has hosted President Zelensky twice at Downing Street.
