Punjab FC played Mumbai City FC to a 1-1 draw in the Indian Super League 2024-25 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday. Mumbai City had 60.8% possession, but Punjab FC fired five shots on target, compared to Mumbai's two. Currently, Mumbai City FC sits in 6th place with 24 points. Meanwhile, Punjab FC holds 8th place with 20 points. Punjab has drawn twice and lost three of its last five games.

Mumbai City's Early Opportunity

Mumbai City FC had the first major chance in the 14th minute. Brandon Fernandes delivered a perfect corner for Nikolaos Karelis. Karelis found space at the near post but hit the bar with his shot, missing the chance to take the lead.

Majcen Scores Late in the First Half

Punjab FC took the lead in added time. Luka Majcen surprised the Mumbai defense with a quick break. Majcen received a through ball from Asmir Suljic, then drilled it into the bottom right corner to give Punjab a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

Mumbai City Equalizes in the Second Half

In the 58th minute, Mumbai City FC equalized through teamwork. Vikram Partap Singh brought down a long ball, then passed to Yoell van Nieff. Van Nieff quickly set up Karelis, who turned and fired into the bottom right corner to level the score at 1-1.

Punjab FC Comes Close Again

Punjab FC responded with pressure. In the 74th minute, Ezequiel Vidal passed to Nihal Sudheesh in the box. Nihal aimed for the top right corner, but Mumbai's goalkeeper, TP Rehenesh, saved it in time. Five minutes later, Brandon Fernandes’ corner met Mehtab Singh's powerful header. However, it lacked direction and went wide of the goal.

Mumbai City FC Nearly Scores Late

In the 87th minute, Mumbai City FC had a chance to break. They launched a counter-attack, but Yoell van Nieff's long-range shot from over 35 yards went wide, and the game ended 1-1.

Key Player: Nikolaos Karelis

Nikolaos Karelis played a key role in the match. He focused more on attacking and scored the equalizer. Karelis completed eight out of 12 passes and made a tackle.
