NorthEast United FC came from behind to draw 1-1 with FC Goa at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati in the
Indian Super League 2024-25 season on Tuesday. Mohammad Yasir gave FC Goa the lead, but Jithin MS’s 76th-minute goal earned the Highlanders a point. This was the 11th draw between these teams, the most in the competition’s history.
NorthEast United Starts Strong
NorthEast United FC began on the front foot. Guillermo Fernandez and Alaaeddine Ajaraie made threatening runs, keeping FC Goa’s defense busy. The first clear chance, however, went to FC Goa. Dejan Drazic crossed to Armando Sadiku, but his header was too weak to trouble Gurmeet Singh.
Soon after, Ajaraie almost scored. Buanthanglun Samte found him with a long pass, but Hritik Tiwari tipped his shot over the bar. Meanwhile, Samte continued to deliver good crosses, but NorthEast’s forwards couldn’t finish.
FC Goa Takes Control
Despite NorthEast’s pressure, FC Goa ended the first half strong. They created chances and controlled the midfield. For example, Brison Fernandes came close but hit the crossbar.
Second Half Action
NorthEast United started the second half with energy but lacked precision in the final third. In the 59th minute, Naushad Moosa made substitutions, bringing on Nestor Albiach and Ninthoinganba Meetei. Nestor almost made an immediate impact, but Odei Onaindia cleared the danger.
Yasir Scores, Jithin Responds
In the 65th minute, FC Goa scored. Jay Gupta sent a long ball to Yasir, who played it to Brison Fernandes and back to Yasir. Yasir then fired into the bottom corner.
Consequently, NorthEast United bombarded the FC Goa box with long balls. However, Odei Onaindia and Sandesh Jhingan handled the aerial threat well. Eventually, NorthEast switched tactics. Ajaraie set up Jithin MS, who calmly scored in the 76th minute.
Both teams pushed for a winner but couldn’t break the deadlock. Therefore, the match ended 1-1.
Key Performer
Carl McHugh was crucial for FC Goa, making three clearances, five tackles, and two interceptions. He completed 31 of 47 passes.
NorthEast United FC will face Kerala Blasters on January 18. Meanwhile, FC Goa will host East Bengal FC on January 19.
