Delhi SG Pipers clinched their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over JSW Soorma Hockey Club, thanks to goals from Sangita Kumari and Deepika.

Delhi SG Pipers finally won their first match in the Women’s Hero Hockey India League 2025. They defeated JSW Soorma Hockey Club 2-0 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. Sangita Kumari (25’) scored in the second quarter. Later, Deepika (47’) added another goal in the last quarter to secure the victory.

Strong Start by Pipers

At the start, the Pipers displayed smooth ball movement. They effectively disrupted Soorma’s passing lanes. Meanwhile, Soorma’s defense held strong and denied the Pipers clear scoring chances. Midway through the quarter, the Pipers earned a penalty corner, but Stephanie de Groof’s shot was saved by Savita, Soorma’s goalkeeper. As the quarter ended, neither team managed to score, despite Soorma’s late surge.

Soorma Takes Control in the Second Quarter

In the second quarter, Soorma started with more aggression. They won possession in midfield and advanced towards the Pipers’ circle. However, they couldn’t convert their pressure into shots on goal. Although Jyoti’s penalty corner attempt was blocked, Soorma’s momentum continued. Eventually, the Pipers pushed back and created scoring opportunities. Despite Savita’s excellent goalkeeping, Sangita Kumari deflected Stephanie de Groof’s shot into the net, giving the Pipers their first goal of the season.

Soorma Presses in the Third Quarter

As the third quarter began, Soorma used a high press, pushing the Pipers back. Nevertheless, the Pipers held firm and didn’t allow clear scoring chances. Against the run of play, they earned a penalty corner but couldn’t capitalize. Shortly after, Vaishnavi’s powerful shot was saved by Elodie Picard. Even though Soorma earned several penalty corners, they couldn’t score. Consequently, the Pipers maintained their lead.

Deepika Seals the Win

In the final quarter, the Pipers earned a penalty. Deepika converted it with a powerful flick to the left corner, doubling the lead. Soon after, Soorma earned a penalty corner but failed to score. The Pipers then controlled the ball to slow the game down. Despite Soorma’s efforts to push forward, they couldn’t find a way past the Pipers’ defense. Ultimately, the match ended 2-0 in favor of the Pipers.
