World No. 1
Jannik Sinner made history by winning the
Australian Open 2025 Men's Singles title. This marks his third Grand Slam victory. He also became the first Italian to achieve this feat, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli's two French Open titles from 1959 and 1960.
On Sunday, Sinner defended his Australian Open crown. He defeated second seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the final. The match, held at Rod Laver Arena, lasted two hours and 42 minutes.
Sinner’s Dominance on Hard Courts
This victory marked Sinner’s third consecutive Grand Slam title on hard courts. He added the Australian Open to his earlier wins at Melbourne Park and the US Open. He also narrowed his head-to-head deficit against Zverev to 3-4.
Zverev’s Grand Slam Struggles Continue
Zverev’s wait for a major title continued. After losses in the 2020 US Open final to Dominic Thiem and the 2024 French Open final to Carlos Alcaraz, he fell short again. Despite 12 aces and 25 winners, his 45 unforced errors cost him the match.
First Set: Sinner Takes Control
Sinner controlled the first set with clinical precision. Zverev faced five break points and managed to save some but ultimately lost his serve. Sinner did not allow
Zverev a single chance to break his serve.
Second Set: Zverev Fights, Sinner Prevails
The second set saw a stronger effort from Zverev. He saved two early break points and pushed the set into a tie-break. At 4-4 in the tie-break, Sinner raised his level, winning three straight points to secure the set.
Third Set: Sinner Seals the Win
Sinner dominated the third set as well. At 3-2, he earned two break points and converted the first to gain a decisive lead. Zverev fought back with a winner but couldn’t sustain the pressure. Sinner closed the match without facing a single break point.
Zverev’s 45 unforced errors were a key factor in his loss. While he showed flashes of brilliance, he struggled with consistency.
Sinner’s Flawless Performance
Sinner displayed remarkable composure throughout the match. He became the eighth player in the Open Era to win his first three Grand Slam finals. His ability to maintain focus and serve impeccably set him apart.
A Historic Moment for Italian Tennis
