Jacob Anderson made history by scoring the fastest goal in the Hockey India League. However, his effort was not enough as Hyderabad Toofans settled for a 3-3 draw against Team Gonasika before losing 1-3 in a penalty shootout in the
Men's Hero Hockey India League 2024-25. Anderson struck in just 20 seconds, while Tim Brand (6’) and Amandeep Lakra (25’) added to the lead. Meanwhile, Victor Charlet (12’, 55’) and Araijeet Singh Hundal (24’) helped Gonasika fight back. As a result, the match went to a shootout, where Gonasika secured the win.
Toofans’ Explosive Start
Right from the beginning, Hyderabad Toofans showed their intent. Anderson capitalized on a defensive mistake and smashed the ball into the net within 20 seconds, setting a new HIL record. Soon after, the Toofans continued their attacking play. In the 6th minute, Maico Casella dribbled skillfully and delivered a sharp pass into the circle. Anticipating the move, Tim Brand quickly deflected the ball into the roof of the net, extending the lead to 2-0.
Nevertheless,
Team Gonasika responded swiftly. In the 12th minute, they earned a penalty stroke. Charlet stepped up confidently and scored, despite the goalkeeper diving in the wrong direction. Consequently, the first quarter ended with the Toofans holding a 2-1 advantage.
Gonasika Fights Back
As the game progressed, the intensity increased. In the 24th minute, Gonasika earned another penalty stroke. This time, Araijeet Singh Hundal stepped up and calmly placed the ball past the goalkeeper, leveling the score at 2-2.
However, Toofans did not back down. Just a minute later, Amandeep Lakra took charge. He unleashed a powerful drag-flick into the net, regaining the lead at 3-2. The home crowd erupted in cheers as the Toofans went into halftime ahead.
End-to-End Action
After the break, both teams pushed hard. The Toofans controlled possession and earned multiple penalty corners. On one occasion, Gonzalo Peillat aimed for the bottom corner, but his shot narrowly missed the target. Despite their dominance, they failed to increase their lead.
On the other hand, Gonasika remained determined. In the final quarter, they launched a series of attacks. First, Araijeet fired a powerful shot, but goalkeeper Dominic Dixon reacted quickly to make a crucial save. Then, he denied another attempt from Araijeet and bravely blocked Nikkin Thimmaiah’s shot.
Even so, Gonasika finally broke through in the 55th minute. Charlet, with great composure, picked his spot and delivered a thunderous drag-flick past Dixon, making it 3-3.
Nail-Biting Finish and Shootout
As the clock ticked down, Gonasika nearly won in regulation time. Jack Waller, celebrating his birthday, made a strong connection with Araijeet’s cross, but Dixon pulled off another stunning save. With no winner in regular time, the game headed to a penalty shootout. At first, the Toofans took the lead. However, Gonasika’s goalkeeper Oliver Payne turned the tide. He made three consecutive saves, ensuring a 3-1 shootout victory for his team.
Toofans' Semifinal Hopes
Despite the loss, Hyderabad Toofans remained in second place. Nevertheless, their semifinal qualification now depends on the results of Wednesday’s matches.
