After Mahakumbh Tragedy, UP Government Rolls Out New Safety Protocols
Uttar Pradesh implements stricter safety measures, including vehicle restrictions and crowd management, after a deadly stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
Following a tragic stampede at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented stricter safety measures. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, resulted in 30 deaths and 60 injuries. Millions of pilgrims had gathered to take a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya, a significant day of the Kumbh Mela.

Cause of the Stampede

Deputy Inspector General Vaibhav Krishna explained that the stampede began when pilgrims pushed against barricades. As a result, a deadly crush of people occurred while they tried to reach the Sangam.

Government's Immediate Response

In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a late-night meeting with senior district officials. During the meeting, he gave clear instructions to control crowd movement and ensure that return routes from Prayagraj remained open.

New Safety Measures

To prevent future incidents, several strict measures have been put in place:
  1. Judicial Probe: A judicial investigation into the stampede has been ordered.
  2. Enhanced Traffic Management: Authorities will now focus on preventing unnecessary halts and controlling traffic flow within the Kumbh Mela area.
  3. Vehicle Restrictions: From now on, vehicles from surrounding districts will be stopped at the borders. Furthermore, no four-wheelers will be allowed to enter Prayagraj until February 4.
  4. Vendor Relocation: Street vendors will be relocated to vacant areas to prevent traffic disruptions.
  5. Improved Facilities: Adequate arrangements for food and drinking water will be provided at all holding areas for the pilgrims.

Key Dates

Looking ahead, the Amrit Snan is scheduled for February 3, which marks Basant Panchami. In the meantime, Adityanath has instructed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to assess the arrangements at the Mela on Thursday.
