NorthEast United FC dominated Hyderabad FC with a 4-1 win at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati. Consequently, this victory completed their league double in the Indian Super League 2024-25 season.
Strong Start and First-Half Control
The Highlanders took an early lead when Guillermo Fernandez scored after a defensive mistake. Shortly before halftime, Alaaeddine Ajaraie extended the lead with a stunning free-kick. Meanwhile, Hyderabad FC fought back in the second half, with Manoj Mohammed pulling one goal back. However, late strikes from Asheer Akhtar and Mohammed Ali Bemammer ultimately sealed the win. As a result, this marked NorthEast United’s first victory in five matches.
Early Pressure and Breakthrough
Initially, both teams battled in midfield. However, NorthEast United gradually gained control, dominating possession and creating chances. In the 12th minute, Ajaraie nearly scored from a corner but was offside.
Then, in the 17th minute, Fernandez capitalized on a defensive lapse. Macarton Nickson sent a brilliant pass to Jithin MS, who crossed into the penalty area. Although Abdul Rabeeh misjudged his header, Fernandez took full advantage and slotted the ball past Arshdeep Singh.
Doubling the Lead Before Halftime
Despite scoring early, NorthEast United continued attacking. Meanwhile, Hyderabad FC’s defense struggled without Alex Saji, who was suspended. Jithin MS caused problems with his pace and dribbling; however, his final passes lacked precision.
Just before halftime, Ajaraie delivered a powerful free-kick in the 45th minute. He sent the ball past Arshdeep into the net, thereby giving NorthEast United a 2-0 lead at the break.
Hyderabad FC’s Efforts and Highlanders’ Defense
At halftime, Hyderabad FC coach Shameel Chembakath replaced Edmilson Correia with Cy Goddard. Subsequently, the visitors pushed forward, with Allan Paulista, Joseph Sunny, and Ramhlunchhunga leading the attack.
In the 57th minute, Benali made changes by bringing on Nestor Albiach and Thoi Singh for Guillermo and Macarton. Even so, NorthEast United defended well, allowing Hyderabad FC to control possession while waiting for counterattack opportunities. Despite a few close calls, Michel Zabaco led the defense superbly.
Hyderabad FC’s Brief Hope and NorthEast United’s Response
In the 70th minute, Hyderabad FC found a breakthrough. Chhunga Hmar delivered a free-kick, and since the Highlanders failed to clear, the ball landed for Manoj Mohammed, who fired it into the net.
Nevertheless, NorthEast United responded quickly. In the 79th minute, Nestor delivered a corner. Ajaraie’s shot was blocked, but the rebound fell to Asheer Akhtar, who headed it in.
Later, Benali introduced Hamza Regragui to close the game. Then, Nestor had a chance but was denied by Arshdeep. Finally, in the 89th minute, Mohammed Ali Bemammer sealed the victory with a powerful long-range strike.
Key Performer
Bemammer controlled the midfield and scored the final goal. Additionally, he made three tackles, created a scoring opportunity, and completed 23 of 38 passes. Undoubtedly, his performance was crucial in NorthEast United’s win.
Looking ahead, NorthEast United FC will visit Odisha FC on February 3. Meanwhile, Hyderabad FC will host Mohammedan SC on February 8.
