Russia has firmly dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s offer to swap territories as part of a peace deal. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, labeled the proposal “nonsense.” He emphasized that Russia can achieve peace through “strength,” referencing recent missile and drone strikes on Kyiv.
Zelenskyy’s Offer for Peace
In an interview with The Guardian, Zelenskyy suggested that Ukraine could give up the Kursk region if U.S. President Donald Trump successfully negotiates a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. He explained, “We will swap one territory for another,” though he added that he has not yet decided which Russian-held territory Ukraine would demand in return.
Kremlin’s Firm Rejection
However, the Kremlin quickly rejected Zelenskyy’s offer. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for the Russian government, stated, “This is impossible. Russia has never and will never discuss the topic of exchanging its territory.”
Ukraine’s Strategic Push in Kursk
Meanwhile, Kursk has become a focal point in the ongoing conflict. Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack in the region in August 2024, marking a significant escalation of hostilities between the two countries.
Recent Attack on Kyiv
Additionally, Russian missile strikes on Kyiv have intensified. Zelenskyy reported that one person was killed and at least four others were injured, including a child. The strikes damaged apartment buildings, offices, and other civilian infrastructure.
Zelenskyy’s Call for Unity
In response, Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s actions, stating that “Putin is not preparing for peace – he continues to kill Ukrainians and destroy cities.” He called for international unity, urging, “Only strong steps and pressure on Russia can stop this terror.”
