Friedrich Merz, the leading candidate for Germany’s next chancellor, emphasized that Europe must be united in foreign, security, and trade policies. He pointed out that the EU cannot afford to be weak in its dealings with Washington.
EU Must Focus on Strategy, Not Micromanagement
At a campaign event in Hochsauerland, western Germany, Merz urged the European Union to prioritize strategic issues. He suggested that the EU should move away from micromanaging daily life and instead focus on larger, more important matters. "The EU must not come to Washington as a dwarf — because then it will be treated as one," Merz explained, calling for stronger leadership from European leaders.
Concerns Over U.S. Tariffs
Merz also voiced his concerns about US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, set to take effect on March 4. He believes that this decision will heighten tensions between the U.S. and its trading partners, particularly Europe.
European Response to Tariffs
In response, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, criticized Trump’s decision as “unjustified.” She assured that the EU would take “firm and proportionate countermeasures” to safeguard its economic interests.
Merz Positioned for Chancellorship
According to Politico’s Poll of Polls, Merz’s CDU and its Bavarian counterpart, the CSU, are currently leading ahead of Germany's February 23 election. As a result, Merz is expected to assume the role of chancellor amid growing tensions with the U.S.
Trump's Protectionist Policies Escalate Tensions
Furthermore, the tariffs represent a sharp escalation in Trump’s protectionist trade policies. These measures effectively invalidate prior agreements with the EU, UK, Japan, and other allies. Trump defended the tariffs, stating they were “the beginning of making America rich again.”
EU Trade Ministers Discuss Retaliation
In light of the situation, EU trade ministers have already begun urgent discussions. They are considering retaliatory measures to target American industries in response to the tariffs.
