Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that he is willing to offer the Kursk region if US President Donald Trump successfully negotiates a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. In an interview, Zelenskyy mentioned, “We will swap one territory for another,” although he was unsure which Russian-held Ukrainian territory he would ask for in return.
Kursk's Role in the War
Kursk has become a significant focus in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. In August 2024, Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack on the region, marking the first time since World War II that Russian territory was occupied by a foreign military.
Zelenskyy Seeks US Mediation
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy is preparing to attend the Munich Security Conference, where he will meet with US Vice-President JD Vance and other White House officials. During this meeting, Zelenskyy plans to push Trump’s team to bring both Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table.
Zelenskyy Criticizes Europe’s Support
Additionally, Zelenskyy pointed out that while Europe has been supportive, it is not enough without U.S. involvement. He stated, “There are voices which say that Europe could offer security guarantees without the Americans, and I always say no. Security guarantees without America are not real security guarantees.” According to Zelenskyy, U.S. support would open opportunities for American companies to participate in the rebuilding of Ukraine. “Those who are helping us to save Ukraine will [have the chance to] renovate it, with their businesses together with Ukrainian businesses,” he said.
Trump Requests Access to Ukraine’s Resources
In response to the situation, Trump has suggested that the US should receive $500 billion worth of Ukraine’s mineral resources. In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that the US should get a share of Ukraine’s mineral wealth as compensation for the substantial aid provided during the ongoing war.
Zelenskyy revealed that he initially proposed this idea to Trump during their meeting in New York last September. He now plans to present a more detailed plan, which would include opportunities for US companies to take part in the reconstruction and extraction of Ukraine's natural resources.
