The wait for the new Chief Minister of Delhi will likely end tomorrow. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold a legislative party meeting at 3 p.m. on Monday. All 48 newly elected BJP MLAs will gather at the Delhi BJP office to choose their leader, who will then be sworn in as the new Chief Minister.
BJP's Announcement on the Process
BJP spokesperson Ajay Alok confirmed the timeline on Friday. He stated, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is returning (from his foreign visit) by tonight. There will be a meeting of our parliamentary board tomorrow or the day after. Delhi’s new CM will be before you."
BJP's Strong Victory in Delhi
In the recent Delhi assembly elections, the BJP won 48 out of 70 seats, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule. The AAP secured only 22 seats. The results were declared on February 8, showing a clear shift in power.
Struggles for AAP and Congress
Several AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, lost in their key constituencies. However, outgoing Chief Minister Atishi held onto her seat. Meanwhile, the Congress party, which once dominated Delhi, failed to win a single seat, continuing its downward spiral.
BJP's Next Moves
The BJP will appoint observers to meet with the newly elected MLAs to finalize the selection of the new Chief Minister. Parvesh Verma, Vijender Gupta, and Satish Upadhyay are some of the names in contention. Verma is a strong contender after defeating Kejriwal in New Delhi.
However, a BJP leader hinted, "You never know... The national leadership can come up with an altogether fresh face who fits the bill and is capable of discharging the duties as Delhi chief minister amid high expectations of the people."
