Mumbai Indians (MI), the inaugural TATA WPL champions, continued their dominant form in Season Three. They secured a convincing five-wicket win over Gujarat Giants (GG) in Match 5 of the TATA Women’s Premier League 2025. This victory kept their unbeaten record intact, with five wins from five matches.
Outstanding Bowling Performance
MI’s bowlers delivered a stellar performance, restricting GG to just 120 runs. Hayley Matthews was the star, taking 3 wickets for 16 runs. Amelia Kerr contributed with 2 wickets for 22 runs, while Natalie Sciver-Brunt added 2 wickets for 26 runs. Thanks to their efforts, MI only needed 121 runs to win.
Sciver-Brunt Leads the Chase
Although MI’s chase wasn’t without challenges, Sciver-Brunt’s brilliant knock of 57 runs off 39 balls guided her team to victory. Despite an early setback with captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s dismissal, MI comfortably reached the target with 23 balls to spare.
MI's Early Dominance
Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to field first. This decision quickly paid off. Sciver-Brunt removed Beth Mooney early, and Shabnim Ismail followed with the wicket of Laura Wolvaardt. MI’s fielding was sharp, with Kerr taking a stunning running catch to dismiss Dayalan Hemalatha. By the end of the fourth over, GG were in trouble at 16/3.
Turning Point in the Match
The turning point came when Sciver-Brunt dismissed Ashleigh Gardner on the last ball of the powerplay. This left GG at a low score of 28/4. MI’s bowlers continued to dominate, with Deandra Dottin being dismissed cheaply for 7 runs. By the time GG reached 43/5, the game seemed to be slipping away from them.
Resilience from Deol
Despite GG’s top-order collapse, Harleen Deol showed resilience, scoring 32 runs off 31 balls. She found some support from Kashvee Gautam, but the partnership was short-lived. Gautam was dismissed for 20 runs, leaving GG at 67/6. Matthews and Kerr kept the pressure on, with Matthews completing her 3-wicket haul.
MI's Steady Chase
In MI's chase, Matthews was dismissed for 17 runs, and the team was at 37/1 after six overs. However, Priya Mishra struck in her first over, dismissing Yastika Bhatia. Then, Gautam took the important wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur for just 4 runs, leaving MI at 55/3 after eight overs.
Sciver-Brunt Seals the Win
Although MI faced a few setbacks, Sciver-Brunt’s steady play helped MI recover and finish the job. Her second consecutive half-century guided MI to the target, and they reached 122/5 in 16.1 overs, winning the match with 3.5 overs to spare.
