Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured the Indian Super League 2024-25 League Winners' title with a 1-0 win over Odisha FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday.
Back-to-Back Champions
Notably, Mohun Bagan became the first team in ISL history to defend their title. With this victory, they reached 52 points, making it impossible for second-placed FC Goa, who have 42 points with three games left, to catch up. Under coach Jose Molina, the team achieved this feat with 16 wins and four draws. Additionally, they set a new league record with six consecutive clean sheets.
Early Missed Chances
At first, both teams played cautiously. However, Odisha FC got their first real chance in the 19th minute. Hugo Boumous sent a perfect through ball to Rahul KP inside the box. Unfortunately, Rahul rushed his shot and missed the target.
Shortly after, in the 31st minute, Lalengmawia Ralte created an opportunity for Jamie Maclaren. Unlike Rahul, Maclaren kept his shot on target, but Odisha FC goalkeeper Amrinder Singh made a brilliant save, pushing it out for a corner.
Amrinder’s Heroics in the First Half
As the game progressed, Mohun Bagan increased their pressure. In the 38th minute, Greg Stewart intercepted the ball near the box and took a quick shot toward the bottom left corner. Even so, Amrinder reacted swiftly and blocked it.
Just before halftime, Maclaren attempted to score off a rebound from a narrow angle. Once again, Amrinder showed his sharp reflexes and stopped the ball, keeping the score level.
Second-Half Action and Game-Changing Moment
After the break, Mohun Bagan continued to dominate possession. In the 60th minute, Stewart broke into the Odisha box and set up Manvir Singh. Unfortunately, Manvir failed to control the pass and wasted a promising chance.
Then, in the 82nd minute, Dimitrios Petratos attempted a powerful long-range shot. Yet, Amrinder stood firm and saved it. However, moments later, the match took a decisive turn. Odisha FC’s Mourtada Fall fouled Maclaren near the box and received a red card. As a result, Odisha had to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
Petratos Secures the Title
With added time approaching, Mohun Bagan pressed harder for a breakthrough. Finally, in stoppage time, Petratos found the winner. He fired a precise shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. This time, Amrinder could do nothing as the ball hit the net, securing Mohun Bagan’s championship victory.
Key Player
Undoubtedly, Dimitrios Petratos made the difference after coming off the bench. He completed five out of six passes and, most importantly, scored the winning goal.
What’s Next?
Looking ahead, Mohun Bagan Super Giant will face Mumbai City FC on March 1. Meanwhile, Odisha FC will take on Mohammedan SC on February 28.
