Russian President Vladimir Putin released a video message on Sunday. He promised more support for military personnel and advanced weapons for the army. He praised Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine, saying they are “defending the future of Russia.” His message came just before the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Putin Honors Russian Troops
Putin dedicated his speech to Russian troops. He called them “the main heroes of Defender of the Fatherland Day.” This national holiday celebrates military achievements. He directly addressed the soldiers, saying, “Special words of congratulations to our soldiers and officers, participants of the special military operation. Today, risking their lives and showing courage, they resolutely defend their native land, national interests, and the future of Russia.”
Putin Avoids Calling It a War
Throughout his speech, Putin carefully avoided the word “war.” In Russia, using this term is illegal and can lead to arrest or prosecution. Instead, he repeatedly called it a “special military operation.” He also reminded soldiers, “It is you who are the main heroes of Defender of the Fatherland Day, which our entire country celebrates.”
Russia Plans to Strengthen Its Military
Putin also vowed to improve Russia’s military strength. He promised to develop new weapons and boost combat power. “Today, as the world is changing impetuously, our strategic course for strengthening and developing the armed forces remains unchanged,” he said. He further stated, “We will continue to build up the combat potential of the army and navy, and their combat effectiveness as the essential part of Russia’s security that guarantees its sovereign present and future, and its consistent development.”
Putin Awards Soldiers with Medals
Putin also honored soldiers who fought in Ukraine. He awarded them medals and insisted they were securing “the peace and future of our people.” His speech came just one day after Russia launched its biggest drone attack on Ukraine since the war began.
Russia Launches Largest Drone Attack on Ukraine
On Saturday night, Russia carried out its largest drone assault against Ukraine. Moscow launched 267 drones, but Ukraine’s air defense intercepted 138 of them. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that this was the biggest drone strike since the war started nearly three years ago.
Ukraine Defends Against Drone Strikes
Ukraine’s Air Force Command reported that 119 drones were jammed before they could cause damage, according to Euro News. However, some still caused destruction.
One of the hardest-hit areas was Zaporizhzhia. Ivan Fedorov, head of the regional military administration, confirmed that the attack injured a 53-year-old woman. She is now in the hospital. The strikes also damaged homes and vehicles in the Shevchenkivskyi district. One house caught fire, but emergency services quickly put it out.
