England clinched a hard-fought 3-2 win against India in the
Men's FIH Pro League at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. Sam Ward led the charge with two goals (19’ and 29’), bringing his season tally to 11. Meanwhile, James Payton opened the scoring (15’). Although India struck back through Abhishek (18’) and Sukhjeet Singh (39’), England’s strong defense held firm.
Fast-Paced Start
Right from the beginning, both teams attacked aggressively. In the 10th minute, India had an early chance when Manpreet Singh passed to Uttam Singh. However, England’s defense quickly cleared it.
England Scores First, India Responds
Eventually, England broke through in the 15th minute. Payton dribbled past defenders and slipped the ball under Krishan Pathak. However, India equalized just three minutes later. Sanjay sent a low cross, and Abhishek cleverly finished it.

However, replays showed no foul. Shortly after, Hardik Singh set up Sukhjeet, who scored to reduce the gap to 3-2.
England Holds Firm
In the final quarter, England started strongly but met resistance from Suraj Karkera. Additionally, Mazarelo blocked Nilam Xess’ drag-flick. With only 86 seconds left, India won a penalty corner. Harmanpreet Singh unleashed a powerful flick, but Mazarelo once again made a crucial save, sealing England’s thrilling victory.
