India’s captain Rohit Sharma is fit and ready to play against New Zealand on March 2 at the Dubai International Stadium. However, the team may make changes. Mohammed Shami is set to be rested, and Arshdeep Singh will likely replace him, according to reports.
Shami to Rest Before Semi-Finals
Shami struggled in his first spell against Pakistan on February 23. Although he recovered after treatment on his right leg, the team wants to manage his workload. Since India plays the semi-final on March 4, they prefer to keep him fresh.
Moreover, New Zealand has many left-handed batters, which also influenced the decision. Arshdeep’s bowling angle makes him a strong choice.
Arshdeep Ready to Step In
During India’s practice session on Friday, signs pointed to a change. Arshdeep bowled 13 overs with a full run-up under coach Morne Morkel. In contrast, Shami bowled only 6-7 overs at reduced intensity. As a result, it seems India will rest him.
Furthermore, the players’ body language at practice suggested a shift in the bowling lineup.
Coaches Indicate Changes
Initially, KL Rahul was unsure about changing the winning team. However, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate later hinted at a bowling adjustment.
"We've had two pretty tough training sessions, so that's been the preparation," ten Doeschate said. "In terms of the bench strength, I think the priority is making sure that we have our best guys available and fully fit for the second game [the semi-final on March 4].
"But we also don't want to rest them for another two days [India have had a week off]. So, to get that balance right, we might just try to share the bowling out a little bit. However, we obviously want to win against New Zealand as well. It's important that we keep that momentum going and obviously to top the group as well. So, the balance of those two things I just mentioned [is] to be thought about."
Match Decides Group Leader
Both India and New Zealand have already secured a place in the semi-finals of ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Nevertheless, the winner of this match will top the group, which will determine their next opponent.
Therefore, India wants to maintain its winning streak, while New Zealand will aim to challenge them before the knockout stage.
