TATA WPL 2025: Delhi Capitals Storm into Playoffs with Dominant Win Over RCB
Delhi Capitals stormed into the WPL 2025 playoffs with a dominant nine-wicket win over RCB, powered by Shafali Verma’s explosive 80* and Jess Jonassen’s composed 61*.
Delhi Capitals, led by Meg Lanning, became the first team to qualify for the TATA Women's Premier League 2025 playoffs after a commanding nine-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Match 14. This win strengthened their top position on the table, with 10 points from seven matches and five impressive victories. A brilliant all-round performance helped DC bounce back strongly with the ball, restricting RCB to 147/5. Their disciplined bowling effort set the stage for a superb batting display. Shafali Verma (80* off 43) and Jess Jonassen (61* off 38) built an unbeaten 146-run partnership, sealing the chase with ease.

DC's Chase: Shafali and Jonassen Lead the Charge

Chasing 148, Delhi Capitals lost captain Meg Lanning early in the innings. Renuka Singh, the Purple Cap holder, bowled a sensational wicket-maiden over, dismissing Lanning with the help of a spectacular catch by Ellyse Perry. This breakthrough gave RCB hope, as the Lanning-Verma partnership had been a key strength for DC. However, Shafali Verma and Jess Jonassen steadied the innings with patience and precision. They navigated the powerplay cautiously, taking DC to 41/1 in six overs. RCB had a chance to break their stand when Georgia Wareham created a stumping opportunity, but Richa Ghosh missed it, proving costly. After that, DC took full control. The left-right batting combination worked perfectly, and boundaries started flowing. Jonassen, promoted up the order, played confidently and scored back-to-back half-centuries. Meanwhile, Shafali attacked with ease, reaching her first fifty of the season with a towering six off Wareham, bringing up a crucial 100-run stand. RCB's bowlers struggled to maintain their lengths, allowing DC to dominate. With an unbeaten 146-run stand, Shafali (80* off 43) and Jonassen (61* off 38) powered DC to victory. Shafali finished the match in style, smashing a six and a four to seal the win.

RCB’s Struggles: Perry’s Lone Battle

Earlier, RCB, asked to bat first by Meg Lanning, faced early trouble. Shikha Pandey struck in the first over, dismissing Smriti Mandhana, who edged one to Lanning at slips. Ellyse Perry and Danni Wyatt-Hodge attempted to rebuild the innings with aggressive batting. Wyatt-Hodge took on Jess Jonassen with two sixes in the fifth over, and Perry ended the powerplay with another maximum, taking RCB to 45/1. However, Marizanne Kapp’s return to the attack ended their momentum as she dismissed Wyatt-Hodge for 21. Perry, in great form, anchored the innings, reaching her fourth fifty of the season. Raghvi Bist provided some support, but dropped catches by Niki Prasad and a missed stumping by Sarah Bryce gave RCB some hope. However, young N. Charani shifted the momentum in DC’s favor in the 17th over by taking her maiden WPL wicket, dismissing Raghvi and then removing Richa Ghosh in the same over. Meg Lanning’s smart bowling changes and Shikha Pandey’s tight spell caused an RCB collapse. Perry remained unbeaten on 60* off 47 balls, but with little support, RCB could only manage 147/5—far below expectations given their strong mid-innings position. DC’s bowlers, led by Shikha Pandey, put in a disciplined effort to restrict the opposition.
