Morgan Freeman took the stage at the 2025 Oscars to honor the late actor Gene Hackman with a heartfelt tribute. However, many viewers were curious about another detail—Freeman was wearing a single black glove on his left hand. While some speculated about its significance, the reason dates back to an accident that changed his life.
The Story Behind Freeman’s Single Glove
In 2008, Freeman survived a serious car accident. He lost control of his vehicle while driving on a Mississippi road, causing it to flip over. Emergency responders had to cut him out of the wreckage. Though he remained conscious and even joked with rescue workers, his injuries were severe. His left hand suffered permanent nerve damage.
A local newspaper editor, as quoted by LADbible, recalled the incident: "They had to use the jaws of life [hydraulic cutters] to extract him from the vehicle. He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.”
Doctors initially assured him that his hand would improve by 2011, but unfortunately, it never fully recovered. He continues to struggle with movement in his hand and wears a compression glove to improve circulation and reduce swelling.
Freeman has spoken about his condition in the past. "I suffered nerve damage and it hasn't gotten better. I can't move it,” he once explained.
He also shared how the injury affects him daily: "If you don't move your hand, it will swell up. Do you know you move your hand about a million times a day?"
In an interview with Esquire, Freeman revealed that he experiences frequent pain in his arm due to fibromyalgia. When asked about it, he said, “It's the fibromyalgia. Up and down the arm. That's where it gets so bad. Excruciating."
A Tribute to Gene Hackman
While his glove caught attention, Freeman’s main focus at the Oscars was honoring his late friend and co-star, Gene Hackman. Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were recently found dead along with their dog.
Freeman and Hackman worked together in Unforgiven (1992) and Under Suspicion (2000). Reflecting on his friend’s legacy, Freeman delivered a touching tribute:
"This week our community lost a giant, and I lost a dear friend, Gene Hackman,” he said. "He received two Oscars and more importantly he won the hearts of film lovers all over the world."
With his powerful words and quiet strength, Freeman reminded the world of Hackman’s lasting impact on cinema while also sharing a glimpse into his own journey of resilience.
