PM Modi visited Gir National Park on World Wildlife Day, went on a lion safari, and reviewed conservation efforts. He also chaired the NBWL meeting and highlighted initiatives like Project Lion and a new wildlife monitoring center

On World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi explored Gir National Park in Gujarat on Monday. He went on a lion safari early in the morning after staying overnight at Sinh Sadan, a state-run forest guest house. Senior ministers and forest officials accompanied him.

Gir’s Expanding Lion Habitat

Gir National Park remains the only home for Asiatic lions. Currently, these majestic animals inhabit nearly 30,000 square kilometers across 53 talukas in nine districts of Gujarat. The government continues efforts to protect and expand their habitat.

Key Wildlife Meeting in Sasan Gir

Later in the day, PM Modi led the seventh National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) meeting at Sasan Gir. The board includes 47 members, such as the Chief of Army Staff, state representatives, NGO members, and chief wildlife wardens.

After the meeting, he would interact with women forest staffers to acknowledge their role in conservation efforts.

Strengthening Lion Conservation

The central government has approved over ₹2,900 crore for Project Lion. This initiative focuses on the conservation and protection of Asiatic lions in Gujarat. Additionally, a National Referral Center for Wildlife is under development on 20.24 hectares in Junagadh.

To boost conservation, officials have also set up a high-tech wildlife monitoring center and a modern wildlife hospital in Sasan. These facilities will improve tracking and medical care for the region’s wildlife.

PM Modi’s Visit to Vantara Rescue Center

Before arriving in Gir, PM Modi visited Vantara, a rescue and rehabilitation center at the Reliance Jamnagar refinery complex. The center provides shelter, medical care, and rehabilitation for rescued elephants and other wildlife.

His visit underscores India's commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainable development.
