Trump Defends Tariffs, Targets India and Other Nations
Trump defends tariffs, calls out India and other nations, and announces reciprocal tariffs starting April 2.

US President Donald Trump defended his tariff policy in his first address of his second term. Speaking to Congress, he argued that the US has faced unfair tariffs from many countries, including India.

US to Enforce High Tariffs

Trump warned that companies making products outside the US would now pay high tariffs. “If you don’t make your product in America under the Trump administration, you will pay a tariff, and in some cases, a rather large one,” he said.

For years, other nations have taxed US goods at high rates. Now, according to Trump, it is time for the US to do the same.

India Charges High Tariffs

Next, Trump named several countries, including the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada. He emphasized that they charge the US much higher tariffs than the US charges them.

“It’s very unfair,” he stated. In particular, he pointed out that India imposes a 100% tariff on auto imports.

Furthermore, he highlighted China’s average tariff on US products is twice as high as what the US charges them. Similarly, he noted that South Korea’s average tariff is four times higher.

US to Impose Tariffs on April 2

As a result, Trump announced that new reciprocal tariffs will take effect on April 2. He explained that he avoided April 1 to prevent confusion with April Fools’ Day.

“On April 2nd, reciprocal tariffs kick in. Whatever they tariff us, we will tariff them,” he declared. In addition, he warned that if other nations impose non-monetary restrictions on US goods, the US will respond with similar barriers.

Strong Support from Republicans

Immediately, Republican lawmakers gave Trump a standing ovation. Meanwhile, his administration had already confirmed a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico. Additionally, the US had just doubled tariffs on Chinese goods from 10% to 20% due to China’s alleged role in fentanyl production.
