Kota, India’s coaching hub, is known for intense academic pressure. Over the years, many students have died by suicide. Now, this stress has led to a shocking murder in Madhya Pradesh. A 20-year-old student, who dropped out of a Kota coaching institute last August, attacked his parents with an iron rod. As a result, his mother died, and his father suffered critical injuries. Police confirmed the incident on Wednesday.
According to officials, Satyam Katre became furious when his father stopped him from using his phone on Monday night. In a fit of rage, he hit both parents on the head. Tragically, his mother, Pratibha, succumbed to her injuries the following night. Meanwhile, his father, Kishore, remains in critical condition at a Gondia hospital.
Extreme Pressure to Crack NEET Led to Attack
Investigators revealed that Satyam struggled to handle the pressure of NEET, India’s highly competitive medical entrance exam. Every year, around 2.3 million students take the test, but only 1.3 million qualify. Consequently, the stress of performing well overwhelmed him.
Moreover, police stated that Satyam’s parents frequently scolded him for not preparing for the exam. They wanted him to become a doctor, but he lacked interest. Eventually, constant pressure took a toll on his mental state.
Kota’s Harsh Study Environment
Thousands of students relocate to Kota every year for coaching. The city’s test-prep industry is worth ₹10,000 crore. However, the intense study schedules, isolation from family, and limited recreation often lead to emotional distress.
Furthermore, student suicides in Kota have become a growing concern. Police data shows 20 suicides in 2023, 15 in 2022, and 18 in 2019. Despite government efforts to prevent such tragedies, the problem persists.
Family Noticed His Mental Struggles
Satyam’s uncle, Arvind Katre, admitted that he changed after returning from Kota. “He was under huge pressure and seemed downcast too,” he said.
After committing the crime, Satyam called the police himself. Eventually, officers arrested him and charged him with murder and attempted murder. Now, his father is still fighting for his life in the hospital.
