Ukraine launched an intense overnight drone assault on Moscow, with Russia’s Defence Ministry confirming that its forces shot down 337 drones across the country. The attack, one of the largest of its kind, signals Kyiv’s growing military capabilities and determination to pressure Russia ahead of critical diplomatic talks.
Moscow Suffers Casualties and Damage
Moscow’s air defenses scrambled to intercept the incoming drones. “The Defence Ministry’s air defence continues to repel a massive attack by enemy drones on Moscow,” Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated on Telegram early Tuesday.
Despite these efforts, the attack caused significant destruction. Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that drone debris killed three people and injured three others in the southern suburbs. Meanwhile, in another southeastern district, debris damaged at least seven residential buildings, adding to the toll on civilian infrastructure.
Attack Coincides with U.S.-Ukraine Talks in Saudi Arabia
This bold strike came just before a high-stakes meeting between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia. Ukraine plans to present a proposal for a partial ceasefire with Russia, aiming to regain U.S. military support that President Donald Trump recently suspended.
Trump, who last month unilaterally engaged in direct talks with the Kremlin, has insisted that Kyiv must make concessions to end the war. His stance has alarmed Ukrainian officials, especially after a heated White House meeting where he berated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accusing him of ingratitude. Since then, Washington has halted military aid, intelligence sharing, and access to satellite imagery to pressure Ukraine into negotiations.
Ukraine Sends a Strong Message to Putin
Ukrainian officials framed the drone attack as a calculated move to push Russian President Vladimir Putin toward compromise. Andriy Kovalenko, a National Security and Defence Council official, underscored its significance.
“The largest drone attack in history was carried out on Moscow and the Moscow region,” he said. “This is an additional signal to Putin that he should also be interested in a ceasefire in the air.”
Growing Tensions and Uncertain Outcomes
As Ukraine escalates its military actions and diplomatic maneuvers, the stakes continue to rise. With Trump’s shifting policies and Putin’s strategic calculations, the upcoming talks in Saudi Arabia could determine the next phase of the conflict.
