Pakistani security forces killed 16 separatists in a counter-operation after Baloch militants hijacked a passenger train in Balochistan on Tuesday. As a result, 104 passengers were rescued. However, officials have not confirmed security personnel casualties.
Militants Hijack Jaffar Express
The Jaffar Express carried 500 passengers from Quetta to Peshawar. Suddenly, armed militants stopped the train in a tunnel near Gudalar and Piru Kunri. Shortly after, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack.
Meanwhile, security forces engaged in a gun battle and successfully rescued 104 passengers, including women and children.
Security Forces Continue Operation
"In the gun battle, which is still ongoing, 16 militants have been killed and many others injured," a security source told agencies.
Consequently, authorities vowed to continue the operation until all passengers were safe. At the same time, some militants fled into the mountains with hostages. As night fell, security forces continued their chase in the dark.
Furthermore, a security source confirmed that 58 men, 31 women, and 15 children reached Mach on another train. "The militants have split into small groups to escape, but security forces have surrounded the tunnel. The remaining passengers will be rescued soon," the source added.
Security Forces Respond Quickly
Earlier, security forces rescued 80 passengers, including 43 men, 26 women, and 11 children, said Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind.
Soon after, military troops and security personnel reached the rugged terrain near the tunnel once railway officials alerted them about the hijacking.
Heavy Gunfire and Explosions Reported
Local media reported intense gunfire and explosions near the tunnel. As the situation escalated, Rind confirmed that rescue teams were sent after reports of "intense" firing at the train.
Meanwhile, district police officer Rana Muhammad Dilawar said security forces surrounded the area. However, militants took some women and children hostage. Additionally, he confirmed that four to five government officials were on the train.
Recent Railway Attacks in Balochistan
Pakistan Railways recently resumed services between Quetta and Peshawar after suspending them for over a month.
Previously, in November last year, a suicide bombing at the Quetta railway station killed 26 people and injured 62 others. As a result, authorities suspended several railway services after the attack.
