Baloch Separatists Attack Passenger Train in Pakistan, Injuring Driver and Taking Hostages
Baloch separatists attacked a passenger train in Pakistan, injuring the driver and taking hostages, triggering an emergency response.

Baloch separatists opened fire on a passenger train in southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, injuring the train driver, according to police and railway officials. The attack targeted the Jaffar Express, which was traveling from Quetta in Balochistan to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Meanwhile, railway authorities confirmed that approximately 500 passengers were on board when the attack occurred.

Militants Open Fire and Take Hostages

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a banned separatist group, claimed responsibility. Moreover, they announced that they had taken hostages, including security personnel. The attack took place near Ab-e-Gum in Mach Town, Balochistan’s Kachhi district. According to The Express Tribune, at least six armed men opened fire, creating panic among passengers.

Casualties and Emergency Response

As a result of the attack, multiple passengers sustained injuries, though the exact number remains unclear. Additionally, the train driver suffered serious wounds. Soon after, security forces and rescue teams arrived, launching an operation to locate the attackers. Meanwhile, railway officials dispatched an emergency relief train to assist.

Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed the heavy gunfire. “There are reports of intense firing at the Jaffar Express between Pehro Kunri and Gadalar,” he told Dawn News. Likewise, Controller Railways Muhammad Kashif stated that the armed men had stopped the train inside Tunnel No. 8.

Government Takes Emergency Measures

In response, the Balochistan government imposed an emergency at Sibi hospital. Furthermore, ambulances and security personnel rushed to the site. Authorities also ordered emergency measures to protect passengers and contain the situation.

The Baloch Insurgency and Ongoing Conflict

For decades, Baloch separatist groups have carried out attacks against government forces, infrastructure, and foreign investments. Consequently, these militant groups, including the BLA, demand independence and a greater share of Balochistan’s natural resources. Notably, the US, UK, and Pakistan have banned the group due to its violent activities.

Overall, the attack highlights the ongoing insurgency in the region and the security challenges Pakistan continues to face.
