Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s support for Mauritius’ sovereignty on Wednesday. He backed Mauritius’ claim over the Chagos Islands. This statement came as Mauritius pushed for a new deal on the Chagos Archipelago, where a US-UK military base is located.
Talks to Resolve the Chagos Dispute
Currently, Mauritius and the UK are negotiating a treaty to settle their long-standing dispute over the Chagos Islands. At a joint press conference, Modi made India’s stance clear.
“In the context of Chagos, we fully respect the sovereignty of Mauritius,” he said.
Moreover, he emphasized the importance of regional stability. “A free, open, secure, and safe Indian Ocean is our shared priority,” he added. His remarks came at a time when China is increasing its influence in the region.
India and Mauritius Strengthen Cooperation
To further enhance ties, Modi announced that both nations would collaborate through key regional forums. Specifically, India and Mauritius will work together in the Colombo Security Conclave, the Indian Ocean Rim Association, and the Indian Ocean Conference. These platforms will help improve security and economic cooperation.
Modi Returns to Delhi After State Visit
After his two-day visit, Modi arrived in Delhi on Thursday. During his trip, he met top leaders and reinforced India’s commitment to Mauritius’ development.
India as a Reliable Partner
During discussions with Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Modi reiterated India’s role as a dependable ally. Additionally, he expressed pride in India’s contribution to Mauritius’ progress. He assured continued support not only for Mauritius but also for the broader Global South.
Notably, on March 12, 2025, Modi attended Mauritius’ National Day as the chief guest. This marked his second time in this honorary role, the first being in 2015.
Mauritius Honours Modi with Top Award
In a historic moment, Mauritius awarded Modi its highest civilian honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. As a result, he became the first Indian leader to receive this prestigious award.

US, UK, and Mauritius Discuss Chagos Base
Meanwhile, negotiations continue over the future of the Chagos Islands. Last month, former US President Donald Trump expressed his support for a deal between Britain and Mauritius concerning the US-UK military base.
For decades, Diego Garcia, the largest island in the Chagos group, has housed the military base. Since the 1970s, this base has played a crucial role in military and security operations.
As discussions progress, all eyes are now on the UK and Mauritius to determine the fate of the Chagos Islands.
