TATA WPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Outplay Delhi Capitals in a Thrilling Final to Retain Trophy
Mumbai Indians secured their second WPL title with a thrilling eight-run victory over Delhi Capitals, thanks to stellar performances from Harmanpreet Kaur and Natalie Sciver-Brunt.

Mumbai Indians (MI) made history as the first team to win two Women's Premier League titles. They defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by eight runs in a thrilling TATA Women's Premier League 2025 final. The match ended a season full of close games with another nail-biting finish.

A Strong Bowling and Fielding Performance

Mumbai Indians (MI) excelled in both bowling and fielding to defend their total of 150 runs. Captain and Player of the Match Harmanpreet Kaur led with 66 runs off 44 balls. Meanwhile, Natalie Sciver-Brunt shined in the final over, taking 3 wickets for 30 runs. Additionally, Amelia Kerr, the Purple Cap winner, contributed with 2 for 25. In the final over, Sciver-Brunt held her nerve, defending 14 runs to secure MI's victory after Marizanne Kapp’s quick 40-run knock gave DC hope at 83/6.

Early Wickets Put MI Under Pressure

Despite the pressure, DC captain Meg Lanning chose to field first. Her bowlers responded well. Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey built early pressure. Consequently, Kapp bowled out Matthews for just 3 runs in the third over. Soon after, Yastika Bhatia fell, scoring 8 runs. Jemimah Rodrigues took a sharp diving catch at cover, reducing MI to 15/2 after five overs. Kapp bowled all four overs in one go, finishing with 2 for 11. Meanwhile, Natalie Sciver-Brunt became the first player in WPL history to score 1000 runs.

Kaur and Sciver-Brunt Stabilize MI’s Innings

MI needed stability, and Sciver-Brunt and Kaur delivered. After a slow start, they attacked. Kaur led the charge, smashing a six over deep square leg. She followed it with three consecutive fours off Jess Jonassen. As a result, she reached her third half-century of the season, taking MI to 87/2 after 13 overs. Sciver-Brunt had a fantastic season, scoring 523 runs. However, she mistimed a slog sweep off N. Charani and got caught at square leg for 30 runs off 28 balls.

DC’s Bowlers Strike Back

DC bowlers fought back immediately. Jonassen dismissed Kerr and Sajana in three balls. Shortly after, Sutherland removed Kaur, who smashed one straight to Kapp at deep extra cover. Kaur scored 66 off 44 balls. As a result, MI collapsed to 118/6. Fortunately, quick cameos from Amanjot Kaur and G. Kamalini helped MI reach 150, setting DC a tough chase for their first title.

MI Strikes Early in the Chase

MI struck early with the ball. Sciver-Brunt bowled out Lanning, and Ismail trapped Shafali Verma LBW. Consequently, DC crumbled to 17/2 in three overs. Jonassen and Rodrigues tried to rebuild, but Kerr dismissed Jonassen for 13 runs. Soon after, Saika Ishaque removed Sutherland for 2 runs. As a result, DC stumbled to 44/4 after eight overs.

Rodrigues and Kapp Fight Back

Rodrigues scored 30 runs off 20 balls, hitting two boundaries off Kerr. However, Kerr dismissed her with a brilliant diving catch. MI’s fielding remained sharp. Additionally, Sanskriti Gupta and Bhatia combined to run out Sarah Bryce, leaving DC at 84/6. They still needed 66 runs from seven overs. The match took another turn when Kapp fought back, smashing two fours and a six in Ishaque’s over. She scored 17 runs in the 16th over, shifting momentum.

Sciver-Brunt’s Heroics in the Final Overs

With 29 runs needed from 18 balls, Sciver-Brunt delivered again. She dismissed Kapp (40 off 26) and Pandey in consecutive deliveries. Although Niki Prasad hit a towering six in the second-last over, DC still needed 14 runs in the final over. Sciver-Brunt held her nerve, conceding only five runs. Her all-round brilliance secured MI’s second title and another final win over DC.
