Zelenskyy Reshuffles Military Leadership, Hnatov Takes Over as Chief of General Staff
Ukraine appoints Andrii Hnatov as Chief of General Staff to strengthen its military amid ongoing battles.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, announced on Telegram on Sunday (March 16) that Andrii Hnatov is the new Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. This decision comes as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government works to strengthen the military amid ongoing battles in Russia’s Kursk region and Ukraine’s Donetsk.

Military Restructuring for Greater Combat Readiness

Umerov emphasized that Ukraine is improving its armed forces to boost combat effectiveness.

“We are systematically transforming the Armed Forces of Ukraine to enhance their combat effectiveness,” he stated.

As a result, Hnatov will replace Anatoliy Barhylevych, who had served in the role since February last year. However, Barhylevych will not leave the defense sector. Instead, he will now serve as the General Inspector of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. In this new role, he will oversee military standards and enforce discipline.

Frequent Leadership Changes in Ukraine’s Military

Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, Zelenskyy has frequently reshuffled key military and government officials. This latest change follows growing tensions in Russia’s Kursk region, where intense battles continue.

On Sunday, Ukraine’s General Staff reported eight combat clashes in the area.

“In addition, the enemy launched nine air strikes, dropping 16 guided aerial bombs, and fired 104 times at Ukrainian troops’ positions and localities,” a military report confirmed.

Kursk Offensive: Gains and Setbacks

Back in August 2024, Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack in Russia’s Kursk region. They successfully captured about 1,300 square kilometers of territory. However, after seven months, they are now retreating. Consequently, this weakens their bargaining position as ceasefire talks with Russia gain momentum. Last week, Russian forces recaptured the key town of Sudzha.

Furthermore, Yuri Podolyaka, a pro-Russian military blogger, claimed that Russian troops pushed Ukrainian forces back to the border in some areas. Nevertheless, reports suggest that Russia’s advance has slowed due to the presence of extensive minefields.

Ukraine Faces More Pressure in Donetsk

Meanwhile, Ukraine is also struggling in its eastern Donetsk region. For months, Russian troops have continued to gain ground, adding to Ukraine’s challenges.

Therefore, as the war intensifies, Ukraine is making strategic leadership changes to adapt. The appointment of Andrii Hnatov highlights Kyiv’s focus on strengthening its military during these critical times.
