New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon firmly backs India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, Luxon praised India’s booming economy. He noted that trade between the two nations now goes beyond timber and other traditional industries.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
"Prime Minister Modi and I sat down today and charted the future of our relationship. We agreed to build greater strategic trust between our defense forces by deploying and training together. We want our scientists to work on global challenges like climate change and commercial opportunities like space. We support businesses in improving air links and strengthening primary sector cooperation. We will make travel easier for students, young professionals, and tourists. We have instructed our trade negotiators to finalize a comprehensive free trade agreement between our nations."
Historical Ties and Indian Community in New Zealand
Luxon highlighted the deep-rooted connection between Indians and New Zealanders, dating back over 200 years.
“It is more than 200 years since Indians and New Zealanders began living side by side…Just as they were 200 years ago, ‘Kiwi-Indians’ today are fully integrated into our multicultural society,” he said.
He pointed out that Indian-origin citizens now make up 11% of Auckland’s population, the largest city in New Zealand. To highlight their contributions, Luxon brought a delegation of influential Indian-origin leaders, including parliament members, business executives, renowned cricketers, and a social media influencer who has transformed investment opportunities for women worldwide.
“These are Kiwi-Indians who get up each morning to make New Zealand a better place to live,” Luxon said. He praised their role in shaping New Zealand’s economy and society. His speech reinforced the strong bond between New Zealand and India, built on history and mutual respect.
Warm Reception from Prime Minister Modi
Prime Minister Modi warmly welcomed Luxon. On social media platform X, he wrote, “It is a matter of immense joy to be welcoming Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Delhi. It is equally gladdening that such a youthful, dynamic, and energetic leader will be the Chief Guest at this year’s Raisina Dialogue.”
Modi also highlighted their earlier discussions. “We had wide-ranging talks earlier today, covering all important sectors relating to India-New Zealand friendship.” The two leaders met at Hyderabad House for a bilateral meeting.
Addressing Security Concerns
During a joint press briefing, Modi spoke about security challenges. He referenced the 2019 Christchurch attack and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
“The devastating attacks on Christ Church in 2019 and Mumbai’s 26/11 tragedy,” he said. He stressed the urgent need for strong action against terrorism. Both leaders pledged to combat terrorism and violent extremism through national and global cooperation.
Luxon’s Visit to India
Luxon arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for a five-day visit. He attended the Raisina Dialogue and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
